Prep Baseball Report

Uncommitted Spotlight - 2024 Arms to Watch

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

As we prepare for our preseason events, we continue to look back at various prospects who impressed throughout the 2022 year and project to have big 2023 seasons.

Since its inception in 2005, the Prep Baseball Report has evolved into one of the country’s biggest and most respected independent scouting services, with a singular focus of providing comprehensive year-round coverage in every state we are in. The mission of the Prep Baseball Report is to scout and promote amateur baseball - high school, junior college and college - and, ultimately, help athletes achieve their dreams of playing baseball at the next level.

Today we're spotlighting 4 uncommitted arms in the 2024 class who all performed well both at events as well as some in-game looks.

2024 Arms to watch

‘24 RHP Miles Chandler (West Seattle)
Highly projectable with a pro build at 6’3, 190. Chandler has a coat hanger upper half and long levers to work with. Works with a steady pace in his delivery and gathers momentum late down the slope. Shorter stride length for his size allows him to stay in his lower half and move easily from the ground up. The arm works freely from a ¾ slot with easy layback and a whippy finish. FB has been 83-85 on our looks both in game and in a workout. He throws with sustainable effort and there’s no doubt we’ll see some bigger numbers on the radar gun in 2023. The SL has been the most consistent secondary offering at 74-77 and it comes out of hand tightly spun with late break/depth.

‘24 RHP Kellen Colglazier (Stadium)
A 2-way athlete with quality tools that play on both sides of the ball. We’re highlighting Colglazier as an arm due to the ceiling he can tap into on the bump. In Aug the FB worked 82-84 from a lower release height and ¾ slot. He works quickly through his delivery but maintains direction and has a soft landing at footstrike. The arm is extra compact at hand break then accelerates quickly out to release, gaining consistent momentum through his finish. He worked in both a CUT and CB while also showing a quality CH. Seeing which of his secondaries takes the biggest jump will be important in 2023.

‘24 RHP Dominic Huffman (Mead)
The combination of size and stuff make Huffman an easy pick to have a big 2023 season on the mound. With a clean, effortless delivery and loose arm action, everything he does on the mound is smooth. All of his offerings jump out of hand. We’ve seen the FB up to 86 with 2300 rpm, showing consistent carry/life when he stays behind the ball. Given the ease of operation and the room to grow into his frame, there’s likely more raw velo in the tank that we’ll see this season. He shapes a tight SL at 74-76 which gives him a true swing & miss offering. In a bullpen setting, the CH really impressed with late arm side-run and a quality velo drop from the FB at 71-73.

‘24 LHP Skylar Perry (Ingraham)
Polished lefty arms who can pitch with multiple offerings for strikes always tend to do well for themselves. Perry fits that mold and looks poised to have a big year on both sides of the ball. As an OF prospect as well, his athleticism translates to the mound with easy, repeatable actions and a clean arm path. FB was 74-75 in late Fall with a lower spin rate & considerable arm side run. His low ¾ slot will help him run the FB off the plate and miss RH barrels. The SL flashed solid potential on our look with tight shape while tunneling well with his FB. With a productive off-season, it’s easy to see the pure stuff making a jump and he could see significantly more innings this year.
