Fall Spotlight -2024 Prospects

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Earlier this Fall we had the chance to gather a strong group of uncommitted '24 and '25 prospects from WA and OR to compete against each other down at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State University. The day kicked off with an indoor workout and then concluded with a controlled scrimmage.

PBR events events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Showcases help identify which prospects have asserted themselves towards the top of their class as well as who might be one of the next youngsters to emerge onto the scene. They also serve as potential identifiers for invite-only events such as our Future GamesJunior Future Games and West Coast Games

Here are notes on 4 standouts from the 2024 class to keep an eye on heading into the 2022 season

fall spotlight

2024 prospects

Dylan Peay 3B / RHP / Eastside Catholic, WA / 2024

Big bodied athlete at 6-foot-2, 190 lbs. Frame has filled out considerably across our looks in the past year. Offensively, starts in an upright, narrow position with some loose barrel action. Takes a low leg lift to gather on backside before getting into forward move. Hands show a subtle stretch back to create separation. Swing works on a short, direct path into contact with a high, one-handed finish. Creates easy loft to pull-side and has potential to grow into more raw power. Loose hands & barrel action into contact. Lower half helps give him additional leverage. Defensively at 3B, starts with a slightly crouched set-up and uses a pre-pitch hop to prepare for contact. Will have to work harder to stay low as a taller INF prospect but shows a quality hip hinge and soft glove hand while funneling the ball in. Deliberate, easy footwork through the play with a long, loose arm action and low ¾ slot. On the mound, Peay might have the most upside as he’s shown a low 80’s FB with the aptitude for spinning a quality breaking ball. Delivery is steady and consistent with a high, balanced leg lift that keeps his direction aligned to the target. Shows him bend on his backside while driving down the slope. Glove hand gets extended just above shoulder height during stride phase. Slight cross action in landing. For a long limbed athlete, he keeps the arm path short and compact, helping him stay on time at landing. Loose and aggressive finish out front. Posts up well with front side and gets over his lead leg as he finishes. Arm could see another jump with a productive off-season.

Mac Reynolds SS / 2B / Liberty, WA / 2024

Lean, wiry athlete with a promising skill-set and projection. Reynolds presently stands at 5-foot-10, 150 with a wide upper half and athletic frame. Solid runner who moves well underway. Offensively sets up with lower half slightly open in a tall, upright stance. Hands start just above rear shoulder in a relaxed position. Subtle gather onto backside as he adjusts bat angle and uses a slight scap load to create stretch against front side. Low, controlled forward stride with a soft landing. Clean direction and balanced hitting base. Works inside of the ball and lets it travel into his set-up. Loose, easy LH swing with classic loft and chance for more power down the road. Middle of the field, line drive approach. Defensively, clean and consistent actions that work well on the dirt. Light on his feet while moving laterally. Keeps body control throughout. Avoids getting rushed or working too quickly. No wasted movement while getting the ball out. High, compact arm action from ¾ release. Momentum stays behind throw. The actions of the game come pretty easily to Reynolds and he could make a big jump with an added year of development and maturation.

Riley Sams RHP / SS / Richland , WA / 2024

6-foot-1, 160 pounds with a extra wiry, lean build. Sams has some of the best projection we’ve seen from any uncommitted arm in the class. Works with a quick, steady tempo and a clean delivery. Stays tall at leg lift with level shoulders and clean direction towards catcher. Maintains length in lower half at hand break and stays extended with his back leg during stride phase. Soft landing at footstrike. Moves well through hips and core into rotation. Arm path works easily with a clean takeaway and loose action into release. Highly projectable actions. Shows proper sequencing at finish and has the ability to brace up his momentum and get through the pitch. FB was up to 84 late in the Fall. SL has chance to be wipe out pitch with up to 2300 rpm. Added strength should make a big impact in his pure stuff. Ended the Fall on a high note and is an arm to watch in 2022.

Nathan Woodside C / 3B / Woodinville , WA / 2024

Hard nosed ball player who doesn’t shy away from competition. Woodside has had an impressive year from start to finish & concluded things with another productive showing to wrap up the Fall. Packs impressive strength & pop into his compact frame with short, strong levers. At the plate, showcases his quick hands with a wide & balanced set-up that doesn’t utilize a stride. Stays centered with a subtle weight shift as barrel gets into the zone on a flat plane and stays level through contact. Stays tight/connected throughout and keeps everything inside of the ball. Present gap-to-gap strength that plays to all parts of the field. Defensively has shown well at both 3B and behind the plate. The actions at C are advanced for his class, particularly the quickness out of his crouch and into his throwing motion. High, compact arm action with over the top release produces consistent, accurate carry on the ball. Has shown the ability to receive velocity and advanced secondary pitches. At 3B, uses quick and active footwork to come through the ball. Handles glove hand with confidence. Easy exchange into throwing motion with the ability to adjust arm slot as needed. Former Future Games participant.
