Prep Baseball Report

Washington 2023 Rankings

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

As we conclude the summer season and get ready for the Fall, we’re taking a more in-depth look at the 2023 class with a new rankings update.

This updated list expands to 160 prospects for the incoming junior class. With a majority of this group on the cusp of seeing varsity action for the first time, we expect to have more updates and changes to this list throughout the year.

Since its inception in 2005, the Prep Baseball Report has evolved into one of the country’s biggest and most respected independent scouting services, with a singular focus of providing comprehensive year-round coverage in every state we are in. The mission of the Prep Baseball Report is to scout and promote amateur baseball - high school, junior college and college - and, ultimately, help athletes achieve their dreams of playing baseball at the next level.

Rankings are based on evaluations by scouting director Dan Jurik as well as additional PBR scouts across the country who have seen prospects from the state at various events.

With a majority of the prospects on the list uncommitted, the goal is for this information to help assist  college coaches as they look to finalize their recruiting classes and add additional pieces to their roster.

‘23 C Carson Ohland (Tahoma) stays at the #1 spot. As a switch-hitting catcher, he has a highly valuable skill-set as well as the ability to match. The Washington commit can really defend behind the dish and can stick at the position long-term. In addition to his catch and throw skills, his ability to receive advanced pitching stands out when you watch him in game. He shows bat speed & power from both sides of the plate & should flash more power as he continues to mature and gain experience.

‘23 SS Sebastian David (Lakeside) first came onto the radar for us back in 2019 and his development since then has been truly impressive to follow. He’s added tremendous physicality to his frame while also showing improved polish as a defender. Offensively it feels like he’s just starting to scratch the surface of what he’s capable of. The Stanford commit is a high motor player at all times and his intangibles really shine during competition.

‘23 RHP Bryce Johnson (Eastlake) gets bump to the #3 spot as he continues to show he’s arguably the best arm in the state for his class. A powerfully built athlete with functional strength throughout. He’s maintained consistent command of his arsenal the last few years while steadily increasing his velocity along the way. Armed with an upper 80’s FB and sharp SL, Johnson should be a dominant arm for a loaded Eastlake team in 2022. Washington commit.

‘23 1B/LHP Brody Mills (West Valley) has been a staple towards the top of our 2023 list for a long time now. The extra strong 1B/LHP has always flashed impressive arm strength with an aptitude for throwing strikes. As of late, the offensive potential is really starting to blossom and he could develop into one of the biggest power threats in his class. Uncommitted.

After the Top 4 spots, we get into a stretch of 5 highly impressive arms

Right now, ‘23 LHP Bjorn Johnson (Lincoln) comes in at #5 overall. But he has the potential to make a strong push even higher on this list before it’s all said and done. A long, lean athlete with solid pound-for-pound strength. Johnson has always had above average velocity and is starting to add more consistency with his secondary offerings as of late. Giving him a strong 3 pitch arsenal highlighted by a FB that we’ve seen up to 89. Washington commit.

‘23 RHP Michael Getzinger (Moses Lake) shows some of the best natural ability to spin a breaking ball that we’ve seen in the class. At 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, he’s already built like a starter and the overall blend of velocity and stuff should help him stick in that role long-term. The FB has been up to 87 on our looks with 2300+ rpm and he’s shown both a CB and SL with late bite and tight spin. Also flashes a CH & has the chance to develop a true 4 pitch arsenal. Gonzaga commit

‘23 RHP Ethan Unruh (Woodinville) presents a really different look from his low ¾ slot coming from a long, lanky 6-foot-5 frame. A high waisted athlete with long levers and tremendous leverage. Unruh gets high marks for his ability to sink/run his heavy FB. His movement helps the velocity play up. He’s been 83-85 on our looks with reports he’ll dial it up to 87-88 at times. Pairs that with a sweeping breaker. Significant projection left to tap into. Oregon State commit.

‘23 RHP Spencer Green (Richland) is another big framed athlete who can run it up there with the best of them. Coming in at about 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, Green is another physical righty with present stuff to go with impressive upside. The frame is built to handle more weight and it’s very reasonable to think more velocity is on the way for him in the near future. With reports that he’s settling into the 86-90 mph range this summer with his FB, he’s another arm that could potentially make a strong run at the #1 spot before this class graduates. Oregon State commit.

‘23 RHP Brady Foster (O’Dea) is the biggest riser overall in our state rankings. A relatively unknown prospect heading into the summer, Foster showed exciting potential in early June at our Summer Kickoff, earning an invite to the 2021 Prep Baseball Report Future Games down at LakePoint in Georgia. While in the south, he dialed the FB up to 90 mph and showed feel for both a CB and CH. Uncommitted

‘23 OF Donte Grant (Puyallup) might be the most dynamic and exciting player on this list. An absolute game wrecker who puts constant pressure on the defense. Grant was a catalyst for the high scoring Puyallup offense this spring and should continue to do the same in 2022. A speedy defender with tremendous closing speed in the gaps. Grant also shows exceptional barrel control from the left-side with the ability to spray hard contact to all fields. Uncommitted.
