Prep Baseball Report

Washington 2023 Rankings Update

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

The 2022 summer circuit has finished up and we are now onto the last graduating HS class for our summer rankings updates. We conclude with an expanded list of 200 players for the 2023 class

With one more year of HS baseball left, the 2023 class was heavily impacted by covid-19 and a large chunk of uncommitted talent remains on the board.

Since its inception in 2005, the Prep Baseball Report has evolved into one of the country’s biggest and most respected independent scouting services, with a singular focus of providing comprehensive year-round coverage in every state we are in. The mission of the Prep Baseball Report is to scout and promote amateur baseball - high school, junior college and college - and, ultimately, help athletes achieve their dreams of playing baseball at the next level.

Rankings are based on evaluations by scouting director Dan Jurik as well as additional PBR scouts across the country who have seen prospects from the state at various events.

With a majority of the prospects on the list uncommitted, the goal is for this information to help assist  college coaches as they look to finalize their recruiting classes and add additional pieces to their roster.

2024 Update / 2025 Update

top 3

Continuing to hold onto the #1 spot is ‘23 C Carson Ohland (Tahoma/Washington commit). The future Husky has the best overall prospect profile of any player in the class for us. Highlighted by his switch hitting ability and power from both sides of the plate. Defensively his athleticism translates seamlessly to C and he has always flashed a strong, accurate arm in game. He’s also a strong runner and could potentially move around the diamond if needed down the road.

A consistent fixture in the Top 10, ‘23 LHP Bjorn Johnson (Lincoln/Auburn commit) vaults up to the #2 spot thanks in large part to a dominant summer that saw him run his FB up to 90-91 on multiple occasions. The velocity gives him some of the best arm talent in the class while his breaking ball & CH have both flashed above average at times as well. He maintains a starter-type effort while pitching and has the potential to be a front line arm in college. His lefthandedness is also a huge plus and if the velo ticks up any more, he’ll be another name to keep an eye on heading into the 2023 draft.

‘23 RHP Bryce Johnson (Eastlake/Oregon State commit) has been as consistent as they come for us and shows no signs of slowing down. A physical, workhorse type starter. He holds his stuff deep into outings and has proven to be a consistent strike thrower. The heavy FB has been 88-90 on our looks and stays competitive around the zone. His hard SL and split give him a 3 pitch arsenal that should give opposing hitters fits throughout 2023.

‘23 OF Tommy Meluskey (West Valley/Oregon commit) surges into the Top 5 after a highly successful appearance at the 2023 Area Code Games. A strong, wiry athlete with twitchy actions. The power really played from the left-side and he showed exceptional burst getting out of the box. The tools work great in the OF and he’s one of the more dynamic overall prospects in the PNW.

‘23 RHP Dylan Skolfield (Eastlake/Washington State commit) turned heads early on this spring as he came out firing mid-to-upper 80s FBs for strikes and commanding a reliable breaking ball for strikes. With a large frame that still projects and a low mileage arm, Skolfield has the chance to develop even further and have a huge year for a strong Eastlake squad.

‘23 C Camden Gillespie (Lake Washington/Edmonds CC commit) made the most of his West Coast Games opportunity this summer and put together an outstanding 3 game performance. Highlighted my multiple XBH’s and a gritty performance behind the plate in the desert handling multiple arms. Gillespie not only has the raw power but has proven to be capable of getting to it in game when it matters.

‘23 C Drew Stevens (University) has shined across multiple events now. A lean, compact athlete with wiry strength. He moves well behind the dish and keeps his hips beneath the ball while receiving. Quick out of the crouch with an accurate arm. Offensively he has plenty of sneaky pop in the bat to go with a sound approach and overall feel for getting his barrel to the ball. Uncommitted.
