Badger State Games Quick Hits: Day 2

By: Wisconsin Staff

Each year, the PBR Wisconsin staff hosts the Badger State Battle at the Woodside Complex sites in Mauston and the Dells as a way to celebrate the roots baseball has grown in the state of Wisconsin. The field is limited to programs that call our state home, pitting the top Wisconsin natives against one another. Following each gameday, we’ll go through the day’s highlights inside these Quick Hits posts.

Continue on below to view day two’s biggest takeaways.

FORCEOUT 15U

INF/RHP Jacob Haughton (Racine Case) is an athletic 6-foot, 185-pound frame with some present strength. Impressed both at the plate and on the mound in Sauk City. On the mound, drop & drive delivery with loose & repeatable arm action. Fastball sat 78-80 mph, T81 mph. Showed confidence in his breaking ball at 67-68 mph with some feel. At the plate, he uses a toe tap trigger and has a compact and uphill barrel path. His present strength creates advanced bat speed, as seen on his double to deep center field.

Isa ROYAL 15u

RHP Sawyer Deering (Kimberly, 2025) is an athletic 5-foot-10, 165-pounds with a projectable frame. Has a smooth, clean delivery with fluid arm action. Dealt on the bump for ISA, throwing a no-hitter in six innings. Fastball sat 81-83 mph, T85. Breaking ball sat 69-71mph with an 11/5 plane that resulted in many swings-and-misses. Fastball heavy earlier in the game, after the first time through the order he mixed in his breaker more often. Both pitches were thrown effectively and for strikes. Locates the fastball all around the zone, consistently kept it low in the zone. Final line for the game: 6 IN, 8 K, 3 BB, 0 H, 0 R.

MIDWEST HALOS RED 15U

RHP Jack Welak (Catholic Memorial, 2025) is an upside 5-foot-10, 145-pound athlete. Struckout six over six innings of work for Midwest Halos Red 15U. Athletic mover on the mound that flashed feel for a FB/CB mix. FB sat 80-82 mph, T83 with run & sink. CB sat 71-73 mph showing out-pitch potential and biting break.

SS John Merk (Nicolet, 2025) has a skinny 5-foot-7, 126-pound frame that has a lot of room to fill out. Consistently found barrels today for the Midwest Halos out of the leadoff spot. From the right side of the plate, he has a balanced setup with an open stance paired with a leg lift load. He shows discipline and did not chase pitches out of the zone. Defensively, he looks the part with his smooth actions in the field. Was 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

16U

BIGLER BIG TIME 16U

Bigler Big Time 16u grabbed a win on Friday backed by a dazzling performance on the mound from RHP JJ Luvaas (Homestead, 2023). Across his complete game efforts, Luvaas allowed just one earned run on five hits and punched out five as well. Offensively for this Bigler squad, OF Logan Rampetsreiter (Brookfield Central, 2024) did most of the damage as he drove in three runs on one hit and helped Big Time grab their first win of the weekend.

Brew State 16U

RHP Ryan Sopha (Pewaukee, 2024) is a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-hander with a workhorse frame. Throughout his outing, he pounded the upper portion of the zone with his fastball at 82-84 mph, playing with carry through the zone at times. He went to his breaking ball often, thrown from a simlar release window and playing off a sharp 11/5 plane, 67-70 mph and tunneling off fastballs at the top of the zone.

FORCEOUT 16U

RHP/OF Marshall Loch (Union Grove, 2024) hosts an athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame with present strength. Took the mound on Thursday and was up to 84 mph with a live, quick arm, complemented by an aggressive SL that flashes sharp; swing-and-miss projection. Showed well at the plate Friday, putting his present bat strength on display with a long and loud pull-side 2B high off the wall.

GRB RAYS YELLOW

The GRB Rays Yellow grabbed their first win of the weekend in dominant fashion as they took down GTS, 11-4. In this game, 1B Brady Mann (Lomira, 2024) and INF John Hadley (Sun Prairie, 2024) would each tally a homerun en route to the win. These would be just two of GRB’s 14 hits as their offense seemed to be firing on all cylinders over at Adams Friendship High School on Friday afternoon.

ISA ROYAL 16U

CF Easton Arendt (DePere, 2024) is an athletic 6-foot, 165-pound left-handed hitting outfielder that showed well on both sides of the ball last night. On defense, he roams the outfield with confidence and long/athletic strides, taking accurate routes on balls with a quick first step - later showing similar athletecism on the basepaths. He also showed off his arm on multiple occasions, playing with carry and accuracy through his target with clear life out of the hand. At the plate, he works from an open setup, moving with a controlled load into a short/direct path to the ball, looking to put the ball on a line. Top of the order profile that projects to stay in centerfield.

RHP Brennen Grams (Kimberly HS, 2024) Listed at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds, athletic build with evenly distributed weight. Came out of the ‘pen for ISA Royal and was ripping off a heavy dose of fastballs; sitting 83-84 mph for his first few pitches and ramping up for 85-87 the rest of the inning, playing with life through the zone.

PTA Cardinal 16U

MIF Dominic Borecky (Hampshire, 2024) 5-foot-11 170-pounds, showing the ability to make consistent contact, and drive the ball the other way while collecting two hits on the day. Sets up slightly wide, open and goes into a toe tap, then delivers the barrel out front. Aggressive baserunner.

MIF Jack Bauer (Greendale, 2024) Ultra-athletic frame with strength, MIF actions and arm strength. Quick bat that has pop to it, showing barrel awareness, taking a short and compact path to the ball and is able to drive it to all fields. Bauer has shown well in front of our staff multiple times now and his performance this weekend is just the most recent one.

MBA 16U

RHP Nick Heisl (Germantown, 2024) started on the mound in the nightcap for MBA 16U and created some intrigue with a loose/quick arm and upside to dream on. His fastball worked in the 78-81 mph range, playing with heavy sink at times and pairing off a sharp 10/4 slider that he was able to throw in any count, maintaining arm-speed while sitting in the 68-70 mph range. His low-effort operation paired with his clean arm shows signs that there is more in the tank for Heisl in the coming years.

RHINO WICK 16U

MIF Rece Much (Hortonville, 2024) 6-foot-1, 180-pounds with plenty of room for projection. LHH with a compact swing that generates hard contact. Flashed feel for the barrel, driving a long home run over the wall in right-center field. Also showed athletic actions up the middle of the infield.

SILVER SLUGGERS NAVY 16U

The Sluggers breeze through the second game of the tournament with a 12-0 win. Oliver Lee (Waunakee, 2024) and Noah Latham-Woodruff (Madison Memorial, 2024) were key pieces in the teams win. Lee struck out four batters in a four inning complete game shutout. Using four pitches to attack the batter. A four seam fastball held at 77-79 mph throughout the entire outing. Working off the fastball was a slider at 68-70 mph, a curveball at 61-63 mph and a circle-changeup at 72-73 mph. Center fielder Latham-Woodruff tallied two hits and three RBIs.

VELOCITY 16U

SS/3B Logan Kurth (Coleman, 2024) 6-foot, 200-pound frame a middle-of-the-order offensive profile. Has present strength that generates quick bat speed. Hands stay quiet through load and explode through the zone. Drove in a crucial pair of runs with a loud double down the left field line in the top of the seventh.

CIF Milo Upton (De Pere, 2024) 6-foot-3, 240-pounds with an ultra-physical presence from the right side of the plate. Has plenty of present strength that generates easy bat speed. Sets up open with a leg kick trigger and smooth loading actions. Put his power potential on full display, launching a no-doubt home run to his pull-side.

17U

EAU CLAIRE A’s 17U BLUE

At a physical and intimidating 6-foot-4 and 270-pounds, 1B Jerome Delikowski (Elk Mound, 2023) was a strong bat in the middle of the Eau Claire A’s 17U Blue lineup on Friday. Went 2-for-2 on the day, including a double that was barreled to the right-center wall, driving in a run. Has quick hands that flashed through the zone, allowing him to turn on a fastball early in the game.

GRB Rays Yellow 17u

RHP Jackson Hewitt (Monona Grove, 2023) 6-foot-1 190lbs large frame with room for added strength. Has a very repeatable delivery with a loose arm with more velo to come. Tossed a complete-game shutout where he collected 6k’s on 4 H and 1 BB, relying on a FB 78-80 mph, and mixed in a CB 68-70.

GTS 17U

RHP Mickey O’Grady (Delavan-Darien, 2023) brings a long and wiry 6-foot-2, 155-pound frame to the mound. Consistent strike-thrower, cruised through five innings against a quality ISA Black squad. Fastball sat between 73-76 mph, also mixed with a slider in the mid-60s in which he is developing feel for as an out-pitch. Was able to scatter a couple of hits and hold a shutout and earn the win for GTS.

MIDWEST HALOS RED 17U

Despite struggling a little bit throughout his outing, RHP Noah Musolf (Franklin, 2023) still did catch our staffs attention thanks to his lively arm. Built at a wiry 6-foot, 170-pounds Musolf ran his fastball up to 89 mph and sat 84-88 that flashed some hard running action and life through the zone. As for his offspeeds, Musolf flashed a tight spinning slider-type breaking ball and also a late fading changeup. While on the bump, Musolf works quickly and adds some funk due to his long but quick arm loop, releasing it from a low ¾ slot. Musolf rose up to No. 34 in our most recent ‘23 rankings and remains one of the top uncommitted arms in the Badger State.

INF/C Vidal Colon (University School, 2023; Illinois-Chicago) announced his commitment to the Flames just before the start of this tournament. Before then, Colon was one of the top uncommitted bats in Midwest and he showed it on Friday. Colon was on the barrel in each of his at-bats and two of them resulted in home runs over the left-field fence.

MIDWEST HALOS NAVY 17U

1B/DH Austin Wienke (Whitefish Bay, 2023) shows a 6-foot-2, 175-pound athletic frame with room to build. Steady presence in the middle of the Halos lineup, coming off of a quality spring season at Whitefish Bay as a first team all-conference infielder. Also threw two shutout innings to close out a victory for Halos Navy.

OF Cole Terry (Marquette University, 2023) is a 6-foot-0, 171-pound athlete that manned centerfield for Halos Navy. Strong, sturdy frame that showed range in the outfield, as he tracked down fly balls in both left-center and right-center. Also showed a quality bat in the middle of the Halos’ lineup, as he barreled an RBI single to left field. Terry wasn’t retired in his three at bats.

MBA 17U

OF Nick Haller (Homestead, 2023) helped propel his team to a 6-1 win. The 5-foot-8, 155-pounds bats lead off for his team and recorded two hits and drove in two runs to lead his team in both offensive categories. A spray type hitter with a simple stance with a long lunging stride. Ran a 7.29 60 yard dash at our Milwaukee Preseason ID.

PHENOM WISCONSIN

OF/RHP Charlie Jackson (Waukesha West, 2023) continues to show as one of the top uncommitted LH bats in the state’s incoming senior class. Physical build at 6-foot-2, 200-pounds with present strength. That strength translates to easy bat speed, which was on display Friday night in Sauk City. Found the barrel for an RBI 2B off the base of the wall in dead CF. Also hopped on the bump and ran it up to 82 mph.

PTA CARDINAL 17U

OF Parker Wyatt (Marquette HS, 2023) is an athletic 5-foot-11, 185-pound well-proportioned right-handed hitting outfielder. Showed his ability to hit to all parts of the field, hitting an outside FB to right field for a single, showed speed out of the box, looking for two on the hit. Moved well around the base paths, showed potential base stealing qualities with his speed.

SILVER SLUGGERS 17U NAVY

Sluggers grabbed a huge win in during the last slot, over at Adams Friendship High School. The Sluggers name seemed fitting as their offense exploded for 11 runs on nine hits against some quality pitching. Leading this offense was 1B Teddy McNeil (Edgewood, 2023) and OF Simon Conkey (Madison West, 2023) as they each collected solo home runs in the win. Rounding out this Slugger offense was SS Keegan Fleischman (Lodi, 2023) and DH/C Leo Koenig (Edgewood, 2023) who each tallied two RBIs on one hit apiece.

STARS BASEBALL 17U

Camden Kuhnke (Hortonville, 2023) ranked No. 22 overall in the state of Wisconsin, continues to swing a hot bat with three hits including a two run triple in their team's 10-0 win Friday morning. The athletic 6-foot-2, 185-pounds right-handed hitting shortstop sets up in a balanced stance with his hands resting on his shoulders. Kuhnke uses a short leg lift stride to start the swing, a direct path to the baseball with a short follow through after contact. A line drive type hitter using a gap-to-gap approach. Kuhnke stole two bags in the game as well.

RHP Nathan Vela (Hortonville, 2023) ranked No. 71 overall in the state of Wisconsin, toed the rubber for Stars Baseball. Vela used two types of breaking balls, a curveball at 68-70 mph and a slider at 71-72 mph.

VELOCITY 17U

OF Bryce Erdmann (Manitowoc Lincoln, 2023) flashed a consistent feel for the barrel in his offensive approach. The 6-foot-1 lefty went 3-for-3 with three singles, two of which went to the opposite field, and one sacrifice fly. Brought a compact and quick swing. Has a projectable frame at 170-pounds, and is a top of the order hitter to watch out for in the future.
