A quick recap from Saturday’s Brookfield Central Sectional, which saw Menomonee Falls score one of the biggest upsets in WIAA history.

Game 1: Homestead vs Whitefish Bay

The first semifinal at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional hosted by Brookfield Central included two aces that faced off against each other: Whitefish Bay’s RHP Mitch Voit (Michigan commit, 2022), who is ranked as the second best player in the class of 2022 in Wisconsin, and Homestead’s LHP Jackson Brewer (2024), who’s also a top prospect in the state’s sophomore class.

Whitefish Bay was able to break open the scoring in the second inning with the help of a leadoff double from SS JD Dix (Alabama, 2024), and a single from OF DJ Kojis (UW-Milwaukee, 2022). After a Brewer error, a groundout from 1B Austin Wienke (2023) allowed Kojis to score and give the Blue Dukes a 2-0 lead.

After getting out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second, Voit cruised the rest of the game. In seven innings, he only allowed three hits and two walks, struck out 10 Highlanders, and earned the victory. Brewer threw six innings for Homestead, struck out five, and only walked one. The Blue Dukes added another run in the fifth, and went on to win the game 3-0.

GAME 2: Wauwatosa East vs Menomonee Falls

The second semifinal featured a Greater Metro Conference matchup between the #7 seeded Wauwatosa East and the #3 seed in Menomonee Falls.

After a couple of quiet innings offensively, the Phoenix erupted for an eight-run third inning where 11 batters stepped up to the plate. OF Jack Anderson (2023) had two hits in the rally, and scored two runs. He went 3-for-3 in the game, including a double, RBI, stolen base, and hit by pitch.

RHP Zach Wolfram (2023), a former PBR Futures Game participant, dominated the Red Raiders lineup. He threw a five inning complete game shutout, and only let three hitters reach base. He struck out nine and walked zero, helping Menomonee Falls get a quick 10-0 victory in five innings against Wauwatosa East.

Sectional Championship: Menomonee Falls vs Whitefish Bay

Menonomee Falls came into the sectional championship game and pulled off one of the largest upsets in the WIAA this season. The Phoenix were able to take down Whitefish Bay, the number one team in the PBR Wisconsin Top 25 rankings for a majority of the season.

The Phoenix were able to keep the bats hot from the previous game as they scored two runs in the first inning. A double from OF Caden Wilson (2022) and a single from C Evan Falkner (2022) plated both runs for Menomonee Falls.

On the other hand, Whitefish Bay could not get the clutch hit they needed to start their scoring. They had baserunners on in every inning except for one, and could only score three runs. The Blue Dukes finished the game with 11 hits, five more than the Phoenix.

A three-run home run from Wilson in the third inning opened the floodgates for Menomonee Falls, and they scored at least one run in five out of the seven innings played. The Phoenix combined to use four pitchers to shut down the juggernaut of Whitefish Bay, and advanced to play in Appleton next week in the WIAA Division 1 State Tournament.
