Class of 2022 Showcase: Infielder Analysis

By Illinois Staff

On Oct. 18, the PBR Illinois staff welcomed participating juniors to this open event in the Chicagoland area: the Class of 2022 Showcase. Over 130 players in the state’s 2022 class ventured to The MAX complex in McCook to perform in front of our staff, helping us gain a greater understanding of Illinois’ junior class, and nearly all of these players remain uncommitted.

We previously published analysis from the event in the days that followed, in the form of our Quick Hits and Statistical Analysis posts. We’ll be rolling out our position-by-position scouting reports this week, which started with the day’s catchers and outfielders. We’re onto the infielders today.

This group was particularly enlightening. With that being said, it came as no surprise to see Kentucky commit 1B Daniel Pacella (Mundelein) at the top of this list. He only further impressed us at this event, running a sub-6.90 in a physical 6-foot-3 frame, connecting for some of the day’s most sound contact from the left side. His athleticism means he might not be locked into a first base-only profile, defensively, though he’s capable of being an asset at the position, in addition to his middle-of-the-order upside from the batter’s box.

Few did more this fall to positively modify their stocks than infielders Patrick Graham (Naperville North) and Christian Mitchelle (Plainfield East). Graham was responsible for one of this event’s top rounds of infield defense. The Naperville North prospect looks like a true shortstop, ranging around with a quickness and bounce, funneling grounders in a fluid rhythm into throws that carry across. As for Mitchelle, he was one of the day’s winners overall. He ran a sub-7.00, took a loud round of batting practice from the right side with noteworthy bat speed, and he was also up to 87 mph on the mound. Look for these two to make their state rankings debuts when we update our board in the near future.

1B/C Victor Izquierdo (Lockport Township) was our top-ranked backstop, reported on Monday, and he’s worth another quick mention here for producing one of the more powerful rounds of batting practice we saw in 2020, in the same class as the one Pacella authored.

Last but not least, 3B/SS Kyle Schupmann (Luther Prep, WI) connected for barreled impact on repeat during his round, averaging 90-plus mph exit speeds and an average batted distance over 310 feet, which paced this event by a fair margin, and that is really saying something. The strength and athleticism combo here should help Schupmann make another substantial climb up the Wisconsin ‘22 rankings, where he attends high school.

Continue on below for an in-depth look at the event’s infielders.
