MLB Draft: Day 3 Recap (WI)

The 2019 MLB Draft has officially come to a close. Hundreds of baseball players from across the country saw their name called, fulfilling life-long dreams in the process. Many of those players were drafted on day 3, which covers the 11th through 40th round. Here is the list of Wisconsin natives who were drafted on day 3.

(Evansville) Rd. 12 - No. 349 Kansas City Royals

6/18/15 - Large frame, 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-handed pitcher, solid sturdy build. Delivery works slightly across his body, top side stays closed, good tempo, ability to repeat. Arm action is loose, long draw with wrapping action, high ¾ slot, strong arm. Fastball sat 88-90 mph, ability to throw strikes. Curveball has more lateral action, 10/4 plane, 69-72, decels at release, could be better suited for slider. Changeup featured slight sink, 77-80 mph.

(Madison JC) Rd. 13 - No. 383 San Diego Padres

7.7.17 - Madison College commit. 6-foot, 182-pound right-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ to over the top arm angle with a long, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with good tempo and balance. Fastball sat 85-87 topping out at 88 mph. Slider was his go to pitch on the day working 76-77 mph with sharp, late breaking action. Also features a curveball at 72-73 mph with more depth than the slider. Changeup sat 80 mph, thrown with fastball arm speed.

(Minnesota) Rd. 18 - No. 540 Philadelphia Phillies

Nickolas Lackney LHP / OF / Whitefish Bay, WI / 2015

2/9/14 - Large frame, extra-long, slender build, 6-foot-4, 175-pound left handed pitcher. Delivery had a slightly quicker tempo and shorter leg lift than previously seen, repeated it well with quicker tempo. Showed fastball command, especially well to arm side, has slight run with late action, finishes well at 82-83 mph touched 84 mph. Changeup has arm side run, excellent action, 74-77 mph. Slider showed signs of high level pitch, 73-76 mph, aggressive arm action. Lackney is still one of the more projectable arms in the state. Combine his left handed arm, athleticism and size and Lackney becomes a rare commodity.

(University of Illinois) Rd. 23 - No. 701 Los Angeles Dodgers

5/1/16 - Illinois commit. 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, live wiry frame, loose and projectable. Arm action is quick and lively, high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 88-90 mph, finished well through the zone. Curveball has sharp biting action, thrown aggressively with conviction, ranged 72-78 mph, plus potential out pitch.

(Coastal Carolina) Rd. 23 - No. 706 Houston Astros

4/26/15 - 6-foot-4, 245-pound, left-handed hitting first baseman with a strong XL-frame. Currently ranked no. 74 in the Wisconsin Class of 2015 Rankings. Committed to Polk State JC. Most impressive offensive player of the day, impact type bat. At the plate hits from a slightly open stance with a quiet approach. Easy power with a short load and short swing path with some lift. Has made big strides over the last year mechanically at the plate to become more fluid. Squared up pitches all day, even foul balls were loud. Hit a towering Homerun pullside in game. Also drove a 2B over the CF’s head off a tough left-handed pitcher.

(Mississippi State) Rd. 29 - No. 874 Pittsburgh Pirates

Marshall Gilbert C / 3B / Westosha Central, WI / 2015

6/19/14 - 6-foot-1, 205-pound catcher, strong physical build, typical catchers body, sturdy lower half. Defensively showed advanced catch and throw abilities, quick clean transfer, sits tall in the crouch. Advanced arm strength, 80 mph out of the crouch, carry through the bag, short over the top arm action. Posted 2.00-2.02 pop times. Offensively hits from an open stance, short stride with consistent loading action, maintains strong balance through contact. Well above average bat seed present, short path stays on top of the baseball, showed the ability to create backspin, line drive gap to gap approach. Flashes power potential, 90 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.47 runner in the 60.

(Tomah HS) Rd. 37 - No. 1127 Boston Red Sox

7/5/18 - Badger State performance helped him become the state's top-ranked 2019 prospect. 6-foot, 155-pound left-handed pitcher, thin build, sloped shoulders. Delivery is easy with little effort, lower half stays tall, minimal use. Arm is live and loose, whippy action, high ¾ slot, plus arm speed. Fastball was electric, worked 88-91 mph, swing and miss fastball, continued to touch 90 mph deep into outing. Swing and miss curveball, 78-82 mph, plus action, late hard bite, 1/7 shape, showed ability to expand the zone and throw for strikes. Was virtually untouchable in his outing, recorded 17 strikeouts in seven innings, retired 13 of 14 via the strikeout at one point. Prielipp continues to show premium stuff this summer, 2019 draft prospect.

(Indiana University) Rd. 40 - No. 1207 Atlanta Braves

Cade Bunnell SS / 2B / Stoughton, WI / 2015

6/4/15 - Looks bigger and more physical than previously seeing him. High level bat, good approach. Typically gets high pitch count at bats but showed more of a willingness to attack pitchers early in counts with good results. Gap to gap pop, doubles power, uses the whole field well, excellent bat control. Pitched in relief, athletic delivery that works slightly open, ¾ slot, loose strong arm, opens slightly early. Fastball sat 88-89 mph for two innings, touched 91 mph once, erratic command, showed it early. Flashed a curveball at 69 mph and changeup at 79 mph, currently average secondary offerings.
