Eastern Wisconsin Open: Blast Motion Board

Kevin Cronin
Area Scout

On Monday, Aug. 16, the PBR Wisconsin team will host its final event on the summer slate: the fourth annual Eastern Wisconsin Open, coming to you from Wildwood Baseball Park in Sheboygan. Every year, the state’s staff reconvenes in Sheboygan where we get a closer look at prospects in the state that we don’t often get to see, and there are plenty of new faces we’re set to see for the first time.

Earlier in the week, our scouting staff collaborated to highlight several standouts and performances from Monday’s showcase inside our Quick Hits piece, which you can find HERE. We then started our deep dive into the data collected by highlighting those who topped our statistical leaderboards and put up noteworthy numbers inside our Stat Story, found HERE.

Today, with the help of our Blast Motion sensors, we're analyzing the swing metrics measured on Saturday at this high-caliber showcase. We also looked at the batted ball data and pitch metrics from this event inside our TrackMan Files earlier today, which you can find HERE.

Hand Speed (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (max)
1 Hayden Konkol WI Denmark 2022 OF 27.2 mph
2 Brett Sommer WI Hortonville 2023 2B 26.8 mph
3 Trenton Feucht WI Freedom 2023 C 25.9 mph
4 Andrew Thom WI Mayville 2022 OF 25.8 mph
5 Ty Cramer WI Cedarburg 2023 UTILITY 25.5 mph
6 Nicolas Luebstorf WI Waukesha Engineering Preparatory 2022 2B 24.6 mph

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (avg)
1 Hayden Konkol WI Denmark 2022 OF 25.4 mph
2 Trenton Feucht WI Freedom 2023 C 24.5 mph
3 Brett Sommer WI Hortonville 2023 2B 24.1 mph
4 Andrew Thom WI Mayville 2022 OF 24.1 mph
5 Ty Cramer WI Cedarburg 2023 UTILITY 24.0 mph

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed (Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Christopher Wiesman WI DC Everest 2022 SS 71.2 mph
2 Hayden Konkol WI Denmark 2022 OF 70.7 mph
3 Brandon Kerns WI Oregon 2022 LHP 69.7 mph
4 Brett Sommer WI Hortonville 2023 2B 69.5 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (max)
1 Brett Sommer WI Hortonville 2023 2B 34.9 g
2 Luis Serrano WI Jefferson 2022 SS 28.0 g
3 Ty Cramer WI Cedarburg 2023 UTILITY 24.6 g
4 Trenton Feucht WI Freedom 2023 C 23.6 g
5 Dylan Costello WI New Berlin Eisenhower 2022 3B 22.9 g
6 Samuel Mommer WI St. Thomas More 2024 C 22.8 g

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 Brett Sommer WI Hortonville 2023 2B 23.4 g
2 Ty Cramer WI Cedarburg 2023 UTILITY 19.0 g
3 Samuel Mommer WI St. Thomas More 2024 C 19.0 g
4 Luis Serrano WI Jefferson 2022 SS 18.9 g
5 Andrew Thom WI Mayville 2022 OF 18.5 g
6 Luke Schwenn WI Waupaca 2022 RHP 18.1 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.
