Fox Cities Preseason I.D.: Blast Motion Board

By Andy Sroka
Illinois and Wisconsin Assistant Director

On March 6, the PBR Wisconsin team hosted the annual Fox Cities I.D. at the Players Choice Facility in Appleton, Wis. This was an open event for all high school classes (2021-24), and gave our staff an ample look at the area's top players.

Shortly after the event, our staff collaborated to highlight the biggest takeaways and highlights from Saturday's showcase and published them within our Quick Hits piece. We then analyzed the traditional statistics we measured at that day and published our findings within this Statistical Analysis. Today, with the help of our TrackMan unit, we're diving a little deeper into the data to see what we can find.

And finally, today, we're assessing the Blast Motion data captured by the sensor worn by players during their round of batting practice. Check out the leaderboards below.

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

10 Bryan Gerbers WI De Pere 2023 C 20.68 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.

ON-PLANE EFFICIENCY PERCENTAGE

Rank Name State School Class Pos On Plane Eff %
1 Logan Hochevar WI Pulaski 2022 C 90 %
2 Cam Kelly MI Gladstone Area 2022 OF 86 %

On-Plane Efficiency: This metric measures the percentage of your swing that the sweet spot of the bat is considered to be On Plane. The reference plane is defined at the moment of impact. The percentage of your swing On Plane is determined by the amount of speed generated within that reference plane.
