On Sunday, March 15, the PBR Wisconsin team hosted its final showcase on its winter calendar, the Madison Preseason I.D., at GRB Academy in Windsor, Wis. In the days following the event, we published rapid analysis on the day’s top performers inside our Quick Hits and Statistical Analysis posts.

This week already, we’ve broken down the event’s catchers, outfielders, and we’ve begun to drop reports on the infielders at the showcase, starting with the juniors and sophomores in attendance.

Today we break down the top 2023 infielders, a deep group led by left-handed hitting Justin Gorski from Rockford Christian in Illinois. Gorski showed well across the board and moves extremely well on the infield with enough upside to stick at shortest op at the next level. 

Roman Trapani (Eau Claire Memorial) found his name on another best of the best list. On the infield Trapani looks like he may grow into a third baseman with some decent pop in his bat.

TOP 2023 INFIELDERS

1. Justin Gorski, Rockford Christian (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-foot-7, 130-pounds. Athletic, smaller frame.
Hit: LHH. Slightly open stance, short leg lift stride, on time and in rhythm. Easy, repeatable swing, path has some length working slightly uphill. Creates line drive contact.
Power: 77 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 81 mph. Short loose arm action, works out of high 3/4 slot, quick release.
Defense: Hands play soft, with quick feet and exchange, played well on the move with body control.
Run: 7.04 runner in the 60. Well above average runner for age.

2. Roman Trapani, Eau Claire Memorial (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP
Body: 5-foot-11, 190-pounds. Athletic build with all-around strength.
Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, leg lift stride with moderate length, subtle hand load, balanced pre pitch actions. Swing is efficient to contact, uphill through impact, flashed hard gap to gap approach, maintains strong balance through contact.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 81 mph. OF - 84 mph. Long arm action from over the top slot in the outfield, works with some effort, showed carry.
Defense: Outfield actions deliberately set up behind the baseball, showed ability to charge aggressively through it and transfer in stride.
Run: 7.56 runner in the 60. 

3. Kyle Pielsnik, Oak Creek (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 5-foot-8, 145-pounds. Lean frame, athletic.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance, short stride, repeatable pre pitch actions, on time hand load, stays above the baseball. Loose athletic swing, flashed quick twitch at times, short to impact on slight uphill plane, some pull side tendency.
Power: 80 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 84 mph. Short loose arm action, played accurate with occasional carry across the diamond.
Defense: Hands play out front, fluid footwork and actions, quick clean exchange while playing through the baseball.
Run: 7.13 runner in the 60. 

4. Garrett Kay, Waterford (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/RHP
Body: 5-foot-8, 130-pounds. Wiry frame.
Hit: LHH. Balanced setup, short stride, on time, hands load back in rhythm. Path is short, creates line drive contact, above average bat speed for age.
Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 84 mph. Loose arm action, playable arm strength is accurate and showed carry.
Defense: Athletic actions, moves well to the baseball, showed body control on the move, hands play soft, out front and with clean exchange.
Run: 7.07 runner in the 60. Above average runner.

5. Braden Smith, Byron (IL), 2023
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP Polished on the mound for his age. Capable of throwing all three pitches for strikes.
Body: 5-foot-10, 160-pounds. Athletic build with strength.
Hit: RHH. Tall setup with narrow and open stance, smooth loading action, athletic pre pitch, moderate stride length. Path works uphill, creates hard contact, in rhythm swing showed knack for finding the barrel.
Power: 82 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 79 mph. Short loose arm action, plays out of high 3/4 slot, athletic release when on the move.
Defense: Plays tall with soft hands, clean exchange, actions are clean, third base profile.
Run: 7.33 runner in the 60. 

6. Cole Selvig, Regis (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/3B One of the top arms in his class.
Body: 5-foot-10, 150-pounds. Athletic frame.
Hit: LHH. Athletic setup, balanced and quiet, in rhythm load actions, lifted stride, moderate stride length. Short path to the baseball, line drive gap to gap approach, in rhythm hitter.
Power: 79 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 83 mph. Long arm path, high 3/4 slot, long to release at times, well above average arm strength, showed carry.
Defense: Hands played soft, showed above average actions that play through the baseball, quick clean exchange.
Run: 7.90 runner in the 60. 

7. Konner Giddley, Beloit Turner (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: 2B/OF
Body: 5-foot-9, 145-pounds. Lean lanky frame.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance, weight loaded on backside, short stride, hands load up into hitting position. Path is short to the baseball, level through contact, ability to create line drives.
Power: 78 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 77 mph. OF - 81 mph. Short loose arm action, high 3/4 slot, showed occasional carry.
Defense: Outfield actions play through the baseball, lively actions, works with two hands out front.
Run: 7.35 runner in the 60. 

8. Jedd Czysz, New Berlin West (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: 1B/RHP
Body: 6-foot-0, 158-pounds. Long slender frame.
Hit: RHH. Squared setup, sway weight into load, short toe tap stride. Projectable bat, showed above average bat speed, loose hands.
Power: 81 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 79 mph. Short arm circle, loose, 3/4 slot.
Defense: A little tall at gather; feet work in rhythm. Clean exchanges with quick release.
Run: 7.51 runner in the 60. 

9. Presley Wachowiak, Catholic Memorial (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-foot-0, 200-pounds. Solid build, durable.
Hit: RHH. Open setup, quick late leg kick trigger. Above average bat speed, uphill plane, pull side power approach.
Power: 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. Occasional pop.
Arm: RH. INF - 83 mph. Above average arm strength, short high 3/4 arm action.
Defense: Playable hands, rolls glove over to field, corner infield profile.
Run: 7.71 runner in the 60. 

10. Edison Alonso, Reedsburg Area (WI), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/OF
Body: 6-foot-0, 165-pounds. Lean athletic shape, high waist.
Hit: RHH. Athletic setup, slightly wide base, reverse toe tap stride. Path is short and works slightly uphill, strong hands create above average bat speed. Middle of the field approach.
Power: 81 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. INF - 70 mph. OF - 72 mph. Long arm action plays out of 3/4 slot in the outfield.

Body: 5-foot-6, 150-pounds. Compact frame with strength, muscle bound build.
Hit: RHH. Balanced stance, slightly crouched, moderate stride length. Strong hands, firm bat strength swing, short to the baseball and showed extension at times, some ability to create backspin.
Power: 76 mph exit velocity from the tee.
Arm: RH. C - 72 mph. INF - 76 mph. Short, stiff throws from a high 3/4 slot. On the infield, long arm action from a high 3/4 slot.
Defense: Long exchange; sidesteps through transfer, shuffles to release. On the infield, controlled footwork, plays firm out front at times, pack and shuffle through exchange and release.

Ashton Kampa, Muskego (WI), 2023
