Milwaukee Preseason I.D.: Outfield Analysis

The outfield prospects from the Milwaukee Preseason I.D. were led by Minnesota commit Steve Jamroziak. Jamroziak looked stronger and more comfortable in the box while still bringing a rare tools set out of his 6-foot-3, 188-pound frame. Tanner Peterson also showed well with an advanced hit tool at the plate, his knack for the barrel is unlike any other in the class.

Here’s a look at the top ten outfielders from the event.

Top Outfield Prospects

1. Steve Jamroziak, OF, Muskego, 2019
Minnesota commit. 6-foot-3, 188-pound outfielder, athletic and advanced frame that projects, improved strength. Plus arm in the outfield, highly accurate and carries, loose over the top slot, 89 mph from the outfield. Action sar smooth, natural easy defender, plays through the baseball in stride, soft hands. 6.85 runner in the 60. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, quiet simple setup, solid balance. Path is level, short to the baseball, lower half works linear. Gap to gap contact, hard off the bat, 92 mph exit velocity from the tee.

2. Tanner Peterson, OF, Wilmot, 2019
Illinois State commit. 6-foot, 182-pound left-handed hitting outfielder, lean athletic frame. Quiet athletic setup, smooth loading action and short stride, repeatable pre-pitch, hitterish in the box. Path is short and flat through contact, stays through the zone with extension, advanced approach. Line drive back-spinning contact to all fields, 92 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is loose and over the top, accurate through target, carries, 87 mph from the outfield. 6.94 runner in the 60. Natural actions, works in stride, soft hands, easy defender.

3. Trace Ferreira, OF, New Berlin West, 2019
Indiana State commit. 5-foot-10, 185-pound outfielder, strong athletic shape. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, smooth load of hands, short lift and replace stride, simple and quiet pre-pitch to swing. Bat speed present, short path, level through contact, short two-hand finish. Slightly favors pull side, hard topspin contact on occasion, 90 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is long and over the top, showed carry, 86 mph from the outfield. Corner outfield profile, plays through the baseball, feet work well, fluid through it in stride. 7.37 runner in the 60.

4. Gunnar Doyle, OF, Oak Creek, 2020
6-foot, 190-pound left-handed hitting outfielder, solid build. Quiet simple setup, slightly open, short stride, excellent balance. Path is short, on top of the baseball, bat speed present, flat through contact. Produces consistent line drives, gap to gap contact, lets ball travel at times. 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. Improved defensive actions and footwork, moves naturally through the baseball. Ran a 6.90 in the 60. Arm action is short loose and over the top, showed carry, 83 mph.

5. Cody Tostrud, OF, Bradford, 2019
5-foot-10, 150-pound left/left outfielder, lean athletic frame, broad shoulders. Hits from a slightly open stance, short loading action with short stride, simple approach, stays quiet. Path is short and efficient. Line drive contact, can use all fields, occasional opposite field tendencies. 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. 6.94 runner in the 60. Possible centerfield defensive profile, plays through with crowhop, quick feet. Arm works over the top, 83 mph from the outfield.

6. Julio Cajigas, C/OF, Romeoville (IL), 2019
Currently ranked No. 148 in Illinois’ Class of 2019. Defensively, behind the plate, short arm action, over-the-top slot, kept throws around the bag with carry, 82 mph from the crouch. Clean on exchanges, some long, quick footwork, pop times 2.00-2.12. From the outfield, short arm action, over-the-top slot, clean on exchanges, accurate with carry, 89 mph. Offensively, switch hitter, open setup, leg kick-timing trigger, short barrel path, pull hitter who flashed bat speed from left-side; 90 mph exit velocity, opposite field approach form the right-side; 94 mph exit velocity. Ran a 7.12 laser-timed 60.

7. Luke Blaha, OF, Muskego, 2019
6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder, solid build carries some present strength, likely to gain more. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, minimal hand load, short stride, good balance. Path is short to the baseball, flashes pop, pull side approach showing hard contact. 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively profiles at a corner outfield spot, plays through the baseball in stride, uses crowhop to transfer. Arm action is over the top, 83 mph from the outfield, some accuracy. 7.25 runner in the 60.

8. Drew Leszczynski, OF/RHP, Brookfield Central, 2019
6-foot-1, 185-pound two-way player, athletic frame, sloped shoulders. Plus  arm strength for age, plays long and over the top from the outfield, with carry at 92 mph. Actions are athletic through the baseball, can play in stride with crowhop to release. 6.92 runner in the 60. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, slight leg kick stride. Hands work loose and produce hard contact. Path has length, sweeping action with slight pull side approach. 92 mph exit velocity from the tee. On the mound arm is long and loose, quick arm strength, high ¾ slot. Fastball runs to arm side slightly, sat 85-87 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 70-73 mph. Changeup fades, thrown with arm speed, 75-77 mph.

9. Max Bruff, C/OF, Indian Trail, 2019
5-foot-9, 190-pound compact, strong frame, right-handed hitting catcher and outfielder. Offensively, open setup, leg kick timing-trigger, maintains good balance through contact. Pull hitter type, uphill barrel path, present bat speed, hard contact, 98 mph exit velocity. Ran a 6.92 laser-timed 60. Defensively, from the outfield and behind the plate, short arm action, occasional carry, fluid footwork, clean exchanges, 82 mph from the outfield, 75 out of the crouch, pop times of 2.15-2.26.

10. Alexander Huissen, OF/RHP, Indian Trail, 2019
6-foot-3, 185-pound two-way player, long lanky frame, loose live body quick twitch actions. Right-handed hitter, tall setup, slightly open stance, regular stride. Quick hands generate bat speed, on slight uphill path. 93 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.01 runner in the 60, runs hard efforty gait. Aggressive actions through the baseball, attacks the ball and works through with a crowhop. Arm action is long and over the top, showed carry, 87 mph from the outfield.

Showed some looseness in hands, line drive contact, occasional opposite field tendency. 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is long and over the top, 79 mph from the outfield. Plays with crowhop through the baseball, light on his feet, plays with bounce.

Aaron Basken, RHP/OF, Bradford, 2020
6-foot-1, 168-pound two-way player. Delivery is down tempo, lands square, some effort at release. Arm action is long, high ¾ slot. Fastball runs to arm side, 77-80 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, slightly decelerated arm action, 61-65 mph. Changeup works to arm side, near fastball arm speed, 71-73 mph. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, loads hands back. Path works uphill through the baseball, aborupt finish. 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. Jason Clark, OF, ROWVA (IL), 2019
5-foot-11, 200-pound outfielder, strong stocky build. Right-handed hitter, open stance, leg kick stride. Path has length, uphill plane, firm bat strength swing. 5-foot-10, 170-pound two-way player, average frame, loose wirty build. Loose live arm projects on the mound. Delivery repeats on a line, high front side. Arm works from high ¾ slot, clean and quick. Fastball is mostly straight, four seam type, 83-84 mph. Curveball has sharp 11/5 action, tight spin with feel, drops for strikes, 65-68 mph. Changeup fades to arm side, fastball arm speed, controls the zone, 73-75 mph. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, smooth loading action, and short stride. Timothy Krohn, OF, Tremper, 2019
6-foot, 155-pound outfielder, lean build. Right-handed hitter, open stance, loads hands back, leg kick stride, dives. Pull side approach, path works loose. 75 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is long and over the top, 79 mph from the outfield. Shows ability to play through the baseball. 7.48 runner in the 60.

Kyle McKinnon, RHP/OF, Bradford, 2019
5-foot-11, 170-pound two-way player, carries present strength. On the mound works directional with simple rocker into quiet and tall balance position. Arm action is over the top, slight plunge on back side. Fastball slightly runs to arm side, sat 81-82 mph. Curveball has gradual 11/5 shape, 63-67 mph. Changeup is thrown with some arm speed, shows fading action down in the zone, 73-75 mph. Right-handed hitter, tall setup, quick leg kick trigger, average balance. Defensively arm played at 68 mph across the infield and 72 mph from the outfield. Actions through the baseball more aggressively in the outfield, more natural actions.

Brandin Podziemski, LHP/OF, Muskego, 2021
6-foot-3, 168-pound left-handed two-way player, lean projectable build. Profiles well on the mound, delivery is smooth and balanced, little effort. Arm action is long, and loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball showed feel for the zone, runs to arm side, 72-73 mph, touched 74 mph. Curveball has depth, 11/5 shape, control of the zone, 62-64 mph. Changeup has feel, near fastball arm speed, 69-71 mph.
