PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week: INF/RHP Grant Ross

By Andy Sroka
Illinois and Wisconsin Assistant Director

On April 27, the WIAA high school baseball season finally made its return. There were some spectacular performances across the state during Week 1’s action, and there was one who stood out in particular: senior RHP/INF Grant Ross (Pewaukee), a Valparaiso recruit, one of the top-ranked ‘21s in Wisconsin.

The uber-competitive Ross helped lead No. 8-ranked Pewaukee to a 5-0 opening week of action from both the batter’s box and the mound. He made two starts for the Pirates, was credited with a win for both, and he struck out 22 batters across 11.1 innings. Additionally, Ross went 10-for-17 with six extra-base hits, including five doubles and a home run that generated seven RBIs and eight runs scored.

Ross is a part of one of the state’s top pitching staffs, and it, in turn, has Pewaukee looking more and more like the team to beat at the D2 level.

Here’s a report on Ross from last summer, with some video attached:

Grant Ross SS / RHP / Pewaukee, WI / 2021

From 7/2/20: 5-foot-10, 175 pounds; compact frame with muscle, sturdy. One of the more fierce competitors in the state’s 2021 class, Ross took the bump in relief against PTA Cardinal on Saturday night and found an extra gear on the mound that we had not yet seen in person. In a close game, Ross was sitting 86-88 mph, touching 90 a couple of times behind a loud grunt, with effort, that explodes through the zone; sharp, firm 73-75 breaking ball earned chases away, too. He struck out all five batters he faced while looking like a next-level, high-leverage reliever. Ross has obvious two-way upside, with a strong right-handed bat, line-drive approach, and defensive actions that should allow him to thrive at third base or second, though he can certainly hold his own at short.

(7/2/20)

For his efforts, Ross has been named the PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week, for the week of Monday, April 26 through Sunday, May 2. We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within our Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that by the end of this week.
