Currently occupying the second spot on our Power 25 rankings, the Franklin Sabers are 13-2 on the year and currently sit towards the top of the Southeast Conference standings. They’re amongst the most talented programs in the state, headlined by a deep crop of experienced senior talent and several impactful younger prospects to surround their older core.

Franklin won all six of their games last week in rather convincing fashion. They pounded out 73 hits as a team, including 19 doubles and five triples, batting .417 as a team with 20 stolen bases to pair. Headlining the Sabers’ offensive onslaught was OF Dylan Mass (2022; Saint Leo), who’s quickly asserting himself as one of the top left-handed bats in Wisconsin’s senior class.

Mass, and the Sabers, started their week off in emphatic fashion, taking two games against Kenosha Bradford in a Wednesday double-header. The left-handed slugger had his first of two explosive performances in the first game, pounding out five hits - four singles and one double. Mass drove in four runs of his own and helped orchestrate a 14-run game for Franklin, scoring three times and swiping four bags. He followed that up with two more hits in the day’s second contest, including a double, and he scored a run in Franklin’s 5-0 victory.

He picked up a pair of hits against Burlington in a 7-2 non-conference victory on Thursday, drawing a walk and scoring another run as well. Mass played a pivotal role in Friday’s important 3-2 win over Bradford, which helped the Sabers complete the season sweep of their conference foe. At the plate, Mass doubled and scored a run, but his most impactful play actually came on the defensive side of the ball. He had an integral outfield assist, throwing a runner out at home from right field to keep Franklin ahead in a game they would only win by one run.

Saturday sparked another outburst from Mass, as he went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate in game one against Racine Park. He doubled and tripled twice, bringing two runners home while scoring four times on his own. Though he didn’t pick up a hit in Franklin’s final game, a 24-0 win, Mass did reach base a few times, scoring yet another run and swiping two bags.

In total, Franklin’s star left-handed senior batted .652 on the week over 23 at-bats, posting an absurd 1.680 OPS. He racked up 15 total hits, including four doubles and two triples, and finished with six RBIs. Mass was productive all week long each time he reached base, scoring 11 times and accounting for eight of Franklin’s team-total 20 stolen bases on the week.

For his efforts, Mass has been named the PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week, for the sixth week of WIAA action, ranging from Monday, May 2 to Sunday, May 8. We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within Friday's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that by the end of this week.
