PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week: RHP/3B Mitchell Voit

Due to the inclement weather that’s come through the state since the start of the WIAA season, we’re combining the first two weeks of action into one ‘Player of the Week’ award.

Entering the season, the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes were the consensus number one team on our Power 25 rankings. Though their roster has an abundance of talent from top to bottom, a large reason as to why our staff is so high on Whitefish Bay is because of RHP/3B Mitchell Voit (2022; Michigan).

Voit’s two-way abilities have been duly noted over the last few years. He’s a frontrunner for the state’s ‘Player of the Year’ award because of what he’s able to do on both sides of the ball and that certainly showed in the Blue Dukes’ first two weeks of action.

Whitefish Bay cruised to a 3-0 week, scoring 48 runs in total and holding their opponents to five - with Voit playing a large role in both aspects. He drew the Opening Day nod for head coach Jay Wojcinski’s squad and twirled a masterpiece, striking out 12 batters in a five inning no-hitter against Greenfield. Voit helped himself out at the plate, tallying three hits out of the leadoff spot for the Blue Dukes.

Our staff took in Voit’s next start against Homestead, where he punched out six batters across three scoreless innings. He was more impressive at the plate in this showing, crushing a home run and double in the contest while driving in three runs. Voit went 3-for-3 against West Bend West two days later, doubling again and bringing two batters home. We had this to say about his performances against Homestead in our “WIAA Scout Blog: Weeks 1 & 2” article:

“Michigan commit; one of the region’s top two-way players, and the No. 2-ranked player in the state’s senior class. Voit made his second start of the season on Wednesday against Homestead, fresh off a no-hit performance in his last outing. Sat at an effortless 88-90 mph throughout his three innings of work; increased slider feel and pitch action were the takeaways here, given that his changeup has previously shown as his best offspeed. The fastball can jump through the zone with some natural arm-side run; slider, 75-76 mph, featured some late action beneath the zone, and more notable horizontal break – it produced several swings and misses and called strikes that caught batters off guard. In the right-handed batter’s box, Voit continues to look like one of the class’ most impactful hitters. He connected for a long home run over the left-center field fence and doubled into the right-center gap in the following at-bat. It’s a simple swing that allows him to make the most of his inherent strength and athleticism, and it projects to generate runs at the next level.”

In total, Voit finished the week with 18 strikeouts across eight innings of work, surrendering just three hits. He went 8-for-10 at the plate with two doubles, a home run, 10 RBIs, and seven stolen bases - all good for an on-base percentage of .818 and an OPS of 2.018.

Voit’s been on the rise in Wisconsin over the last calendar year. He earned an invitation to the Super 60 Pro Showcase and emerged a winner amongst a loaded crowd from that event, vaulting up to second overall in the state’s updated senior class rankings, too. As one of the youngest players in attendance, Voit put together an impressive workout, running a 6.86 in the 60-yard dash, reaching a 100.1 mph max exit velocity in BP with wood, and breaking the Super 60 positional infield velocity record with two 97 mph strikes across the diamond. After all of that, he hopped on the mound and pumped his fastball in at 91-92 mph from an easy, low-effort operation.

For his efforts, Voit has been named the PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week, for the first two weeks of WIAA action, ranging from Tuesday, March 29 to Sunday, April 10. We're thankful for the POTW submissions we received from the coaches across the state. The players who garnered POTW consideration will earn a place within Friday's Diamond Notes story, so be on the lookout for that by the end of this week.
