Power 25 Update: Week 4

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

This week was pretty much status quo at the top. Outside of Hortonville, the top 10 teams did what they were supposed to do, beating the teams they should. A slight juggle here and there is about all you’ll see in the top 15 teams in the state, outside of that there are a plethora of teams fighting for those last ten spots. Here’s a look at what the Power 25 looks like in week four.

Inside The Top Five

No. 1 Arrowhead (7-0) isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. One of the possible road blocks for the Warhawks was No. 8 Indian Trail which was scheduled for Saturday but got rained out.

No. 2 Bay Port stayed undefeated in Wisconsin and in dominating fashion this week, winning two games by a combined score of 21-0. The Pirates schedule looks a little tougher this week with Ashwaubenon and Sheboygan South as mid-week contests and a Saturday double header against Pulaski.

Janesville Craig moves up a spot to No. 3 after a big week for the Cougars, beating No. 6 Sun Prairie, improving to 9-0 and atop the Big Eight Conference.

Denmark continues to roll with one of the hottest pitching staff’s in the state. At 9-0 the Vikings have shutout their last four opponents including a no-hitter. The Vikings should have a good chance of continuing that trend with a fairly weak schedule until the week of May 5 when they take on Bay Conference leader West De Pere.

No. 5 Appleton North rounds out the top five improving to 7-1. The Lightning have the biggest week ahead of them out of top five teams, with two Power 25 matchups this week against Kimberly and Oshkosh North. A couple of wins this week would put a huge notch in the Lightning belt.

New And Climbing

La Crosse Aquinas climbed six more spots this week up to No. 16. At 11-0 the Blugolds beat Division 1 Holmen this week as well as wins over Stevens Point and La Crosse Central who beat Eau Claire North this week.

Stevens Point is back in the Power 25 at No. 19 and their early loss to Aquinas is not looking as bad now as Aquinas is proving to be a force to reckon with.

Eau Claire North jumped a couple spots to No 18 with a win over crosstown foe, Eau Claire Memorial.

Prescott went from the bubble into the Power 25 at No. 23. They are off to a 9-0 start going 4-0 this week.

Green Bay Preble and Waterford round out the top 25 at No. 24 and No. 25 respectively. Preble picked up a pair of wins this week against previously ranked No. 20 Sheboygan South.

Down and Out

Hortonville had a tough week and lost twice, dropping them to No. 17 after taking losses to No. 9 Kimberly and No. 7 Oshkosh North.

Eau Claire Memorial also took two losses this week and dropped to No. 20. Losses to Eau Claire North and out of state Lakeville North (MN) are added to their resume.

Sheboygan South had a week they would like to forget dropping four games on the week completely out of the Power 25.

Beaver Dam and Westosha Central both dropped out of the Power 25. Beaver Dam lost twice this week and the Falcons managed a split with Waterford after really taking one on the chin losing 19-1 last Tuesday.
