Preseason All-State: Infield Analysis

By Illinois Staff

On March 20, the PBR Illinois team hosted its annual Preseason All-State showcase, bringing together a collection of the state’s best juniors in one place, Bo Jackson’s Elite Sports Dome in Lockport, Ill.

We began our post-event breakdown in the days that followed, detailing the prospects who exited the event with their prospect arrows pointed way up inside of this Quick Hits post. We highlighted the showcase’s biggest takeaways, focusing on the high-follow uncommitted juniors in the class, accompanied by written analysis and video. Later on, with the help of our TrackMan unit and Blast Motion devices, we published the TrackMan Files and the Blast Motion Board stories, as well as the highlights from the traditional statistics measured inside of our Statistical Analysis story.

Today, we’re continuing our position-by-position analysis by publishing the scouting reports on each of the infielders who made it out to this event. We began our positional breakdowns this, analyzing our catchers and outfielders.

This was one of the deepest, most talented positional groups we’ve had at an event in recent memory. Many of the top juniors in the state reside within this group, like Logan Wagner (Home School, 2022), a Louisville recruit. We had not seen Wagner at an event until his performance here at Preseason All-State, where he was highly impressive. He showcased a true switch-hit profile here, striking balls with authority into both gaps, reaching a max exit speed of 100 mph, practically. Wagner also showed as a rhythmic shortstop, complete with big arm strength that reached 94 mph across.

Notre Dame recruit Estevan Moreno (Montini Catholic, 2022) wields some of the class’ top pop from the right side, and it was on display again at Preseason All-State. Jack Scheri (LaSalle-Peru, 2022; Creighton commit) upped his prospect stock at this event, showcasing 6.48 speed and a robust round of batting practice, with impactful right-handed bat strength.

The top uncommitted players on the list below are Washington Community’s Easton Harris (2022) and Naperville North’s Patrick Graham (2022). Harris demonstrated the benefits from a diligent offseason, as he improved statistically across the board. He started the day by running a 6.75 and then showcased whippy right-handed bat speed and increased strength on impact, which has him trending way up as a top-25 ranked player in the state’s class now. Graham is developing a reputation as one of the top defenders in this class, with quick and highly athletic all-around actions and excellent glove-to-hand skills.

For the full reports on this group, continue reading below.
