Preseason I.D. - McHenry: Infield Analysis

 The second annual Prep Baseball Report Preseason I.D. - McHenry at Pro Player Academy in McHenry, IL was held on Sunday, January 29, 2017. The event, which sold out, had over 100 2017-2020 high school graduates in attendance. We began the rollout of the event a couple of weeks ago taking a look at the Quick Hits and Stat Story.

Today we continue the analysis with the infielders in attendance.

Top Infield Prospects

1. Brandon Komar, RHP/3B, Elkhorn, 2017
Madison JC commit. 6-foot, 182-pound right-handed hitting RHP/3B. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a loose, quick arm action. Tall and fall, delivery with a closed toe landing. Upright finish with smooth rhythm. Fastball was straight at 85-87 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape and flashed sharp-breaking action at 71-73 mph. Changeup sat 78-80 mph for strikes. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and long leg lift stride. Gap to gap hitter with fluid rhythm and a long swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 93 mph exit velocity from a tee. 4.69 runner down the line. Defensively has a loose arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry across the infield at 86 mph.

2. Danny Sperling, 3B, Wauconda, 2018
6-foot-2, 175-pound left-handed hitting third baseman with a lanky, athletic frame. Offensively hits from a wide base with a balanced setup. Smooth load to the backside, short stride and good balance. Line-drive, gap-to-gap approach with fluid rhythm and path stays level through the zone. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. 4.36 runner down the line. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Steady hands with fluid footwork. Clocked at 81 mph across the infield.

3. Chase Maifield, 1B/LHP, Grant, 2018
6-foot-5, 250-pound left-handed hitting 1B/LHP. At the plate hits from an open stance with a long stride back to even. Pull, power hitter with an uphill swing path. Fluid rhythm with a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Solid footwork around the base with soft hands. Threw 78 mph across the infield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall delivery with an open landing and some rhythm. Fastball was straight at 75-78 mph. Changeup sat 72-75 mph. Struggled to command curveball and slider. Curveball sat 65-67 mph, slider was thrown at 62-65 mph.

4. Tanner Dreher, INF/RHP, Covington (IN), 2020
5-foot-10, 175-pound, strong, athletically built, two-way prospect. Defensively, on the infield, flashed a plus arm for his age: clocked at 86 mph with life across the diamond. Athletic, clean arm action, short, quick and from an over-the-top slot. Hands are soft, fields athletically, plays through the baseball and fluid footwork. Offensively, flashed bat speed, uphill path and fluid rhythm throughout; 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Open setup, big pre-pitch movement and quick, long leg-lift stride. 4.60 home-to-first runner. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, repeatable, tall and fall delivery, stays on-line, recoil finish. Athletic, clean, quick arm action from an over-the-top slot. Feel for a three-pitch mix. Fastball, straight, up in the zone at times, 82-83 mph, topped at 84. Good feel for his curveball, depth, occasional sharp action, 12/6 shape, 65-67 mph. Changeup, near fastball arm speed, thrown for strikes, occasional sink, 72-76 mph.

5. Owen Patzin, SS, McHenry, 2018
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with an athletic frame. Defensively has a short, loose arm action from a ¾ slot. Accurate throws with carry throwing 78 mph across the infield. Plays low and thru the ball with a quick, clean exchange. Can play on the run. Offensively hits from an open knee to knee setup. Short load to backside with a short stride and good balance. Line drive, pull hitter with an uphill swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. 4.44 runner down the line.

6. Zach Swearingen, SS/RHP, Romeoville, 2018
5-foot-10, 135-pound right-handed hitting SS/RHP. Offensively hits from a tall, slightly open stance. Short leg kick stride with average balance. Gap to gap hitter with fluid rhythm and a level swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. 4.58 runner down the line. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Accurate throws with carry across the infield throwing 79 mph across the infield. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork and soft hands. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a square landing. Fastball was straight at 74-75 topping out at 76 mph for strikes. Curveball has short, slurve action at 64-66 mph. Changeup was firm at 70-72 mph for strikes.

7. Brandon Bannon, C/INF, Richmond Burton, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound catcher/infielder, lean athletic shape, loose lively frame. Showed arm strength defensively, 76 mph out of the crouch, 82 mph across the diamond, carries well, short over the top slot, loose arm. Hands are soft, quick exchange, athleticism played well both behind the plate and on the infield. Posted one of the top pop times, 1.97-2.08. Right-handed hitter, balanced, slightly open stance, short stride. Loose hands, level path with line drive contact, showed bat speed. 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. 4.28 runner down the line.

8. William Heasley, INF/RHP, St. Scholastica, 2019
5-foot-9, 155-pound, two-way player. Offensively, right-handed hitter, fluid rhythm, gap-to-gap approach, long uphill path. Exit velocity registered at 79 mph from a tee. Balanced, slightly closed setup, backload, toe tap timing trigger, maintains balance through contact. Defensively, flashed soft hands, loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws clocked at 75 mph across the diamond. 4.94 home to first runner. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, works with some rhythm, stays in line, finishes athletically. Short arm action from a high ¾ window. Fastball, thrown for strikes, works mostly straight, sat 72-73 mph. Curveball, feel, 11/5 shape, slurve action, 64-65 mph. Changeup, fade action, 66-67 mph. Cutter, 66-67 mph.

9. Logan Tabeling, RHP/3B, Tuscola, 2020
5-foot-11, 165-pound left-handed hitting RHP/3B. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Full over the head tall and fall delivery with a closed landing and upright finish. Fastball sat 79-82 mph. Curveball is a plus offering with 12-6 shape with tight rotation and sharp breaking action at 68-70 mph for strikes. Changeup sat 74-77 mph, controlled it better from the stretch. At the plate hits from a tall, open stance with a leg kick stride and average balance. Opposite field hitter with an uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. 4.42 runner down the line. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry across the infield at 81 mph.

10. Austin Greco, RHP/INF, Mundelein, 2020
5-foot-8, 153-pound, average build, two-way prospect. On the mound, right-handed pitcher with above-average arm strength for his age; fastball was up to 82 mph. Long, quick arm action out of a high ¾ window. Slow paced, smooth, tall and fall delivery, stays on-line, lands square and finishes athletically. Fastball, mostly straight, sat 79-82 mph. Curveball, tendency to slow arm speed, thrown for strikes, 12/6 shape, occasional depth, 62-64 mph. Changeup, thrown for strikes, fade action, 68-71 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, stays compact, minimal wasted movement and creates advanced bat speed; 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Short, uphill bat path, made consistent hard contact, gap-to-gap approach. Balanced setup, leg-lift stride and good balance throughout. Defensively, reliable hands, lets the ball get deep at times, long arm, high ¾ slot, throws carry and clocked at 82 mph across the diamond. 4.47 runner in the 60.

Wide, open setup, pre-pitch load, short stride. Defensively, long arm action from a high ¾ to ¾ slot. Throws clocked at 70 mph across the infield. 5.37 home to first runner. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery. Short arm action from a high ¾ arm angle. Fastball, works mostly straight, 69-71 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, gradual action, 62-64 mph. Changeup, 65-68 mph.

Ben Belgrave, RHP/1B, Cary Grove, 2018
6-foot-5, 175-pound, lanky, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher with some projectability. Tall and fall delivery, works with some rhythm. Slide step out of the stretch. Long arm action from a ¾ window. Fastball, slight sink action, sat 78-79 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, slurve action, 66-69 mph. Changeup, 71-73 mph. Offensively, Tall, slightly open setup, leg kick, uphill path. Exit velocity registered at 86 mph. Defensively, short arm action from a ¾ to low ¾ arm slot. Throws clocked at 77 mph across the diamond. 4.86 home to first time.

Bryan Belo, INF, Jacobs, 2020
5-foot-8, 135-pound, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, fluid rhythm, loose hands with some bat speed and violence in swing. Balanced setup, leg-kick timing trigger and finishes up off his backside. Registered a 71 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, plays with bounce and feet work quick on the infield. Athletic fielding position, works below the baseball, out in front of body with early glove presentation. Throws from a high ¾ slot and clocked at 68 mph across the diamond. Ran a 4.76 home-to-first.

Jackson Broom, INF, Huntley, 2019
5-foot-10, 165-pound, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, fluid rhythm, pull-side approach, uphill path. Exit velocity registered at 83 mph from a tee. Open setup, back load, short stride. Defensively, reliable hands, short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws clocked at 75 mph across the diamond. 4.69 home to first runner.

Valentin Cerna, INF, Grant, 2020
5-foot-5, 140-pound, left-handed hitting infielder. Defensively, athletic actions, attacks the baseball, flashed quick footwork. Short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Nick Finley, 3B, McHenry, 2018
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitting third baseman with a lanky frame. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly open setup with a leg lift stride. Line drive hitter with a long, uphill swing path and fluid rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 90 mph exit velocity from a tee. 4.25 runner down the line. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Plays taller with ok footwork, threw 80 mph across the infield.

Carter Foat, INF/RHP, McHenry West, 2020
5-foot-6, 130-pound, wiry, two-way player. Offensively, right-handed hitter, fluid rhythm, simple swing, line drive approach, uphill path. Exit velocity registered at 74 mph from a tee. Open setup, smooth load, short stride, maintains balance through contact. Defensively, showed body control. Short, loose arm action from a high ¾ slot.  Throws clocked at 67 mph across the infield. 6-foot-1, 200-pound right-handed hitting 1B/RHP. At the plate hits from a tall setup with a leg kick stride. Pull, power hitter with a long, uphill swing path and fluid rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 94 mph exit velocity from a tee. 4.43 runner down the line. Defensively showed good footwork around the bag. Throws have carry across the infield throwing 80 mph. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball has sinking and running action at 82-83 mph. Throws curveball aggressively from a higher arm slot with 11-5 shape at 72-73 mph. Changeup blends with fastball at 79-80 mph.

Ghavin James, RHP/INF, Crystal Lake South
6-foot-4, 210-pound, strong, two-way player. On the mound,right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, stays in line, lands square. Long arm action from a high ¾ angle. Fastball, slight run, sat 76-77 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, some depth, 65-69 mph. Changeup, 67-69 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, loads back, leg kick. Line drive approach, path works uphill. Exit velocity registered at 90 mph from a tee. Defensively, short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws flashed accuracy and clocked at 76 mph across the diamond. 4.94 home to first runner.

Brandon Jernigan, INF/RHP, Huntley, 2020
5-foot-11, 235-pound, strong, thick build, two-way prospect. Offensively, right-handed hitter with advanced strength in swing; 91 mph exit velocity from a tee. Pull-power potential, bat speed, fluid rhythm and natural lift in swing. Balanced setup, smooth load, leg-kick timing trigger and average balance through contact. Defensively, at first base, feel around the bag, clean, quick exchange. Long arm action from a high ¾ slot, clocked at 78 mph across the diamond. Ran a 5.11 home-to-first. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, slight cup on the backside and comes out of a high ¾ slot. Delivery works with regular effort and stays on-line. Fastball, mainly straight, sat 77-79 mph. Curveball , varied between 12/6 and 11/5, sat 64-66 mph. Changeup, tendency to slow arm, sink action, ranged between 59-62 mph.

Joseph Kaminski, RHP/INF, McHenry West, 2019
6-foot-1, 170-pound, athletic, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher with some projectability. Tall and fall delivery, stays in line, lands square, falls off to the first base side. Short arm action from an over the top angle. Fastball, works mostly straight, sat 80-82 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, 62-66 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, 72-73 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, present bat speed, some hard contact, gap-to-gap approach, uphill path through the zone. Exit velocity registered at 87 mph from a tee. Wide, open setup, short stride. Defensively, clean exchange, short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws flashed accuracy and clocked at 75 mph across the infield. 4.55 home to first runner.

Bryce Klepfer, C/INF, Huntley, 2020
5-foot-5, 125-pound left-handed hitting catcher/infielder. Hits from an open stance, slightly crouched, stride has some length getting back to square. Path is short, line drive opposite field contact. 73 mph exit velocity from the tee. 4.69 runner home to first. Defensively arm action is short and over the top, 63 mph out of the crouch, 72 mph across the infield. Presently showed best on the infield, moved well laterally, some body control for his age. Showed good quick footwork out of the crouch. 2.22-2.43 pop times.

Troy Larson, INF, Sycamore, 2019
6-foot, 152-pound, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, some quick twitch, uphill path through the zone. Exit velocity registered at 76 mph from a tee. Balanced setup with a leg kick timing trigger. Defensively, clean exchange, short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws clocked at 66 mph across the infield. 4.76 home to first runner.

Michael Machamer, 3B/RHP, Carmel Catholic, 2020
5-foot-11, 149-pound right-handed hitting 3B/RHP with a lanky frame. Offensively hits from a couched, balanced setup with a low hand set. Long stride with a long, level swing path. 71 mph exit velocity from a tee. 4.87 runner down the line. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 67 mph across the infield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a short stride and toe closed landing. Fastball sat 67-70 mph. Curveball has gradual action at 56-69 hmp. Changeup sat 60-64 mph.

Jeremy McFarland, INF, Romeoville, 2018
6-foot-2, 220-pound, right-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, balanced setup, short stride. Short, slightly uphill path, simple swing. Exit velocity registered at 86 mph from a tee. Zach Model, INF, Huntley, 2019
5-foot-5, 126-pound, left-handed hitting infielder. Offensively, hits from a wide setup, short stride, maintains balance through contact. Simple swing with an uphill path. 6-foot-, 180-pound, lanky, athletic infielder. Offensively, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, short stride, path works uphill. Exit velocity registered at 76 mph from a tee. Jack Sauser, RHP/INF, Normal University, 2019
6-foot-4, 170-pound, lanky, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher with some projectability, tall and fall delivery. Long, loose arm action from a high ¾ angle. Fastball, works mostly straight, sat 77-79 mph. Slider, 11/5 shape, slurve action, 68-71 mph. Changeup, slight sink, 66-69 mph. Cooper Schmidt, RHP/INF, Cary-Grove, 2019
5-foot-11, 153-pound, two-way player. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, stays in line, toe lands closed. Short arm action from an over the top angle. Fastball, works mostly straight, sat 75-76 mph.
