Preseason Power 25 Countdown: No. 24 Stevens Point Area

By Andy Sroka
Illinois and Wisconsin Assistant Director

The Wisconsin high school baseball season kicks off on April 27, opening day for regular season action under WIAA regulations. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2021 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, leading into a countdown through the official PBR Wisconsin Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

Perennially, we’ve submitted a Preseason Questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis. These preseason previews are also assembled with the help of Joe Waite and his comprehensive Baseball Wisconsin Yearbook, and the 2021 edition will soon be available for purchase here.

Our 2021 preseason coverage continues today.

OUTLOOK

The SPASH Panthers are the heavyweights in the region, having dominated the decade inside the Wisconsin Valley, earning eight of the 10 conference titles from 2010-2019, and head coach Kraig Terpstra is just five wins shy of an historic 300 for his career in his 17th season.

It’s that kind of coaching pedigree that will be an unquantifiable benefit for programs in the state, following the lost 2020 season. So, Coach Terpstra is as essential to the Panthers’ spring season as just about anyone on the actual roster… outside of RHP/OF Logan Schulfer. The senior righty is one of the state’s best prospects, and if he isn’t pulled into pro ball out this June, it’ll be nice to see a homegrown talent like this stick close to home, as he’s committed to Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Logan Schulfer (9/12/20)

Schulfer’s presence at the top of this rotation is something few teams can boast they have: a true ace. He’s flanked by a couple more senior arms, LHP Kenny Schultz and RHP Jacob Sankey, to combine for a solid three-man staff that should be the source of most of its success. Sophomore RHP/INF Devin Mrozek has shown flashes of advanced strength that’s played from both the mound and right-handed batter’s box, and considering this squad may be in need of an offensive boost, Mrozek’s progression on offense will be especially key to SPASH’s spring.
