Preseason Preview: Green Bay East-West

The Wisconsin high school season kicks off on March 29, the first day for regular season games. Most teams will begin practicing on March 21, getting their rosters set and finalizing their lineups. Over the next several weeks, leading up to opening day, we will be rolling out team previews of high school teams all across the state and across all classifications, eventually launching our Preseason Power 25.

We have been sending out our annual Preseason Questionnaire to coaches all across the state and as the responses flood in we will bring you a snapshot of what to expect along with top players and keys to success for that particular team.

If you don’t see your team’s season preview make sure your head coach fills out his Preseason Questionnaire.

NEWCOMER TO WATCH
Sophomore Zach Watzka (RHP) is slated to see significant time on varsity this year. The younger brother to 2015 graduate and Winona State freshman Jacob Watzka (RHP), Zach is a 6-foot-1, 175-pounder who is well on his way of filling a similar body type to his older brother. His skill set already plays well at the varsity level and will likely be a contributor both with the bat and on the mound.

OUTLOOK
The Devil Cats are transitioning to the Bay Conference this year along with Xavier as Denmark, Luxemburg-Casco, Marinette, and Oconto Falls have left the conference for the Eastern Valley. With that being said West De Pere is likely their top competitor for for the top spot in the Bay. East-West is likely to contend well in their new conference as they finished middle of the pack last year in a much tougher Fox River Classic. Coach Bauer will be looking for some underclassmen to fill some holes in in the lineup but the pitching depth with Van Boxel, Ostertag, Fonder and an up and coming Watzka should be a strength of the team. Both of the left handed bats of Trent Bauer and Van Boxel will bolster the middle of the lineup. Bauer hit .370 for the Devil Cats last year.
