A high level athlete from the Madison area, OF Ryan Drumm (Edgewood, 2023) has long been on our radar, dating back to the 2019 PBR Junior Future Games when he first donned the Team Wisconsin jersey. Drumm’s performance throughout this season, starting at Illinois' Lockport Preseason I.D. and carrying on throughout the year, earned him a spot on Team Wisconsin at this year’s PBR Future Games. Shortly after the highly attended event, Drumm capped off a successful summer season by committing to Butler.

We recently had the opportunity to discuss the recruiting process with Drumm, what he was looking for out of a college experience, and several other baseball-related topics.

OUR Q&A

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Drumm: I was looking for a school where I could have a chance to play as soon as possible and where I could maximize my skill development.

P: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

D: To an extent. I wanted to stay in the Midwest, but if a school with the right credentials in another region of the country was the right fit, I would have gone there.

P: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

D: It started to pick up following the Future Games. Lots of other schools began to get in contact with me, however the school I committed to first saw me play earlier in the summer at Grand Park.

P: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

D: The culture that the head coach has begun to establish, the player development, and the program’s plan for the future.

P: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

D: Purdue, Illinois, and Wichita State.

P: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

D: I would have to say last winter in season prep, RHP Luke Agnew (Marquette, 2023; Wichita State) gave me the toughest time in scrimmages and live hitting situations. He made a large velocity jump last year and the mental aspect of his attack is more advanced than any other pitcher in the state.

P: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

D: Last fall when I had my first call with a coach, I came to the realization after the call.

P: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

D: Be the hardest worker on your team and make sure you take care of your body.

P: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

D: Playing at the Future Games in front of hundreds of colleges.

P: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

D: I think we will surprise a lot of people this year. We have a strong assortment of upperclassmen and some hungry younger guys that will make an impact. Don’t be surprised if Edgewood makes a deep playoff run.
