Q&A with Missouri commit Thomas Curry

A premium backstop in the Midwest, C Thomas Curry (Arrowhead, 2023; Missouri) has shown well in pretty much every event we have seen him. Currently, Curry is positioned at No. 8 overall in our state's ‘23 class rankings and also 414th in our national rankings. The physical right-handed hitter is best known for his powerful bat and he showed it at the 2021 PBR Future Games. During his BP round of the event, Curry barreled six balls up at over 95 mph and three over 98 mph. He caught several barrels in the gameplay portion of the event and translated some of that strength behind the crouch, topping at 84 mph on his best throw to second base.

After the Future Games, Curry announced his commitment to SEC member Missouri. Recently, we had the chance to talk with Curry about his recruiting process along with many other baseball related topics.

Scouting Report

5/7/2021

Missouri commit; the No. 8-ranked sophomore in the state. Continues to show one of the most physical profiles in the state, and generates prominent bat strength on contact – one of the state’s hardest batted-ball profiles, regardless of class. Muscular/compact build at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds. Right-handed hitter, balanced/square setup, hands set high; confident approach, aggressive. Loads onto back leg, strides into hip/torso separation, uncoiling for robust swings that produce evident, fast bat speed; advanced strength makes for repeat hard-hit contact. Short, simple swings allow for him to meet the ball on plane especially well, and his innate strength takes it from there. Re-entered the ballgame shortly after a foul tip ricocheted below his eye and swelled it shut; collected four base hits upon re-entering. Physicality translates behind the plate where his arm strength is weaponized. Aggressively back-picks baserunners, trail runners. Efficient catch-and-throw skills, arm carries to the base in-between innings; popped in the 2.00-2.15 range consistently in warm-ups. Room to grow as a receiver, but works hard to stick pitches around the zone, and he’s mobile for his sturdy stature. Vocal catcher with leadership qualities, too.

OUR Q&A

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Curry: I was just trying to see how things were going to play. I wasn't going to try and force anything or make it happen too fast. I was looking for a place where I think I would fit in and have a good relationship with my coaches and be able to play some of the best competition there is.

P: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

C: I think it did a little bit because I wasn’t trying to go somewhere where my family would have to fly to come watch or visit so I think Missouri is a good distance away.

P: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

C: Things really started to heat up the first weekend at the MPL in Indy. That's when a lot of the coaches I had been talking to saw me play and Missouri first saw me play in Georgia during the summer.

P: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

C: I really liked the feel of the campus when I was there and the coaches were really the factor that sealed it for me because those are the guys in charge and if there isn’t a good relationship the process would become less fun.

P: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

C: The next school I really had in mind was College of Charleston because I could tell the coaches were really into having a good relationship and again the feel of the campus was amazing.

P: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

C: I would say facing RHP Jonah Conradt in winter live ABs. He is just a special talent and there isn’t a pitch he throws that doesn’t move a lot.

P: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

C: I would say I really thought I had a shot freshman year because that is when colleges started to show interest. Not a lot came from the interest but it showed that I was on the radar which was a really cool moment.

P: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

C: I would say just find a good lifting and development program that really jumped me to the next level.

P: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

C: I would say when we won the PBR qualifier at Grand Park my freshman year when we won 3 games straight on a Monday for the championship and I had caught all 3 games and the feeling when we held up the big trophy and the banner. That picture is still my background today.

P: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

C: I think we got a really good shot this year with the team we have. We have a lot of returning starters from last year and what I think is the best pitching rotation in the state with some key guys in the lineup. I wouldn’t be shocked if we made a run for state this year.
