Southern Wisconsin Open: Catcher Analysis

The Southern Wisconsin Open took place on October 30, 2016 at STiKS Academy in Oconomowoc, WI. The open event featured over 50 players.

Today we start the event analysis with the catchers. 2018 Parker Burch (Madison Memorial) stood out for his catch and throw skills behind the plate. Let’s take a look at the catcher reports from the event.

Jonny Baumann, C, Living Word Lutheran, 2019
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Behind the plate has a long arm action from a ¾ slot. Long transfer, tall receiver in drills. Popped 2.19-2.36 and threw 73 mph from the crouch. Showed flexibility in the lower half receiving in bullpens. At the plate hits from a wide base with a closed setup. Arm bar load with a long, uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 90 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.94.

Kade Bohlman, C, Janesville Parker, 2018
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a solid frame. Offensively hits from a wide base, with a slightly open setup. Fluid rhythm with a short, leg lift stride. Line drive hitter with a level swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.69.  Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Good flexibility in the lower half, active blocker behind the plate. Popped 2.18-2.29. throws showed carry throwing 74 mph from the crouch.

Parker Burch, C, Madison Memorial, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a strong, athletic frame. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry out of the crouch. Taller reliever in drills with quick footwork. Popped 2.15-2.19 and threw 74 mph from the crouch. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a short leg lift stride and average balance. Short, uphill swing path with fluid rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.15.

Jimmy D’Angelo, C, West Bend West, 2019
5-foot-6, 160-pound left-handed hitting catcher. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly open setup. Closes off with toe tap stride. Short, uphill path keeps hands close to the body. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.56. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Slower transfer, gains ground towards second on throws. Popped 2.29-2.42 and threw 68 mph from the crouch. 

Owen Greene, C, Madison Memorial, 2018
5-foot-8, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a low hand set. Line drive hitter with an uphill swing path and backside collapse. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.92. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Hops out of the crouch well, gaining ground towards second base. Low target receiving in pens. Popped 2.29-2.44 and threw 71 mph from the crouch. 

Jeffrey Hynes, C, Brookfield Academy, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound left-handed hitting catcher. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with an arm bar load and short stride. Uphill swing path. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.29. Defensively has a short, stiff arm action from a high ¾ slot. Showed a quick exchange. Popped 2.25-2.36 and threw 68 mph from the crouch.

Rudy Rodriguez, C, Greenfield, 2017
5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher. At the plate hits from a tall, narrow setup, slightly open with a high hand set with an uphill swing path. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.15. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Popped 2.41-2.54 and threw 71 mph from the crouch.

Clay Schult, C, Valley Lutheran, 2018
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a large, lanky frame. At the plate hits from a balance, closed setup. Loads to backside with a heel lift stride. Line drive hitter with a short swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.70. Defensively has a short arm action from a high 3.4 slot. Slow exchange, stand and throw. Popped 2.26-2.37 and threw 71 mph from the crouch. Showed soft hands receiving.
