Southern Wisconsin Open: Outfield Analysis

The Southern Wisconsin Open took place on October 30, 2016 at STiKS Academy in Oconomowoc, WI. The open event featured over 50 players. Yesterday we started the player analysis with catchers and today we move on to the top outfielders from the event.  

Top Prospects

1. Pierce Blohowiak, OF, Xavier, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with an athletic frame. Ran an event best 6.70 60 yard dash. Defensively has a loose arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry from the outfield, throwing 84 mph. Athletic defender with a clean exchange and soft hands. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load. Linear lower half with good balance. Fast bat with extension thru contact. Showed strength thru contact with 88 mph exit velocity from a tee.

2. Nick Herbst, OF, McFarland, 2018
6-foot-2, 165-pound left-handed hitting outfielder with an athletic frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a low hand set. Rhythmic, smooth load to backside. Line drive hitter with a short, uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 87 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.10. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Throws showed carry throwing 83 mph from the outfield. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork.

3. Tyler Gaecke, OF/RHP, Mukwonago, 2018
6-foot-3, 205-pound right-handed hitting OF/RHP with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup. Long toe tap stride with average balance. Pull, power hitter with an uphill swing path and fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.35. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Plays thru the ball, showed off raw arm strength throwing 79 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with easy effort. Works in line with home plate, with a square landing. Fastball was up in the zone at 74-76 topping out at 77 mph. Slider has 10-4 shape at 63-64 mph. Showed feel for changeup at 68-70 mph with cutting action for strikes.

4. Carson Holin, OF/LHP, Sun Prairie, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound left-handed hitting OF/LHP with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a wide base, drops back elbow on load. Short stride with good balance. Line drive hitter with a short swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 6.88. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Threw 77 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with smooth rhythm. Repeats mechanics well. Fastball was straight at 76-78 mph. Curveball shape worked between 12-6 and 1-7 at 61-63 mph with gradual action. Changeup sat 64-65 mph.

5. Calvin Nowak, OF, Waukesha West, 2018
5-foot-10, 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder with a lanky, athletic frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with short load and leg lift stride. Line drive, pull hitter with a short, uphill swing path and fluid rhythm. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.11. Defensively has a short, stiff arm action from a high ¾ slot. Clean exchange with slower actions. Accurate throws from the outfield at 72 mph.

Luke Follmann, LHP/OF, Madison Edgewood, 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound left-handed hitting LHP/OF. Defensively has a long, stiff arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 75 mph from the outfield. At the plate hits from a balanced setup, arm bar load with good balance. Level swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.63. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall, slowed paced delivery, works in line with home plate. Fast all worked up in the zone at 72-76 topping out at 77 mph. Curveball showed gradual action at 59-62 mph. Slowed down on changeup at 63-66 mph.

John May, SS/OF, Kewaskum, 2018
6-foot, 147-pound left-handed hitting SS/OF. At the plate hits from a balanced, crouched setup with a short leg lift stride. Opposite field, line drive hitter with fluid rhythm. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.31. Defensively in the outfield has a short arm action from a high 3/4 slot. Accurate throws. Plays thru the ball with athletic actions and a quick exchange. Threw 80 mph from the outfield. Plays fast in the infield, threw 71 mph across the diamond.

Josh Nitch, OF, Warren (IL), 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with a lanky, athletic frame. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws had carry throwing 83 mph from the outfield, inconsistent accuracy. At the plate hits from an open, spread out stance. Dives back on stride with average balance. Short, uphill swing path with choppy rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 87 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.28.

Ben Nordloh, RHP/OF, Waunakee, 2018
6-foot, 205-pound left-handed hitting RHP/OF. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball was straight at 78-79 mph for strikes. Slows on curveball, has 11-5 shape at 60-62 mph. Showed feel for changeup maintaining fastball arm speed at 70-71 mph for strikes down in the zone. Offensively hits from a balanced, closed setup with a long toe tap stride. Pull, power hitter with stiff rhythm. Showed strength thru contact with 93 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.61. Took drills in the outfield and threw 79 mph.

Jarrad Rettler, RHP/OF, Kaukauna, 2018
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Drop and drive, online delivery with a square landing. Fastball was mostly straight at 75-79 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with gradual action at 65-67 mph. Maintained fastball arm speed on changeup that showed slight running action at 67-71 mph. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws showed carry throwing 80 mph from the outfield. At the plate hits from a balanced, closed setup. Short, heel lift stride with a short, uphill swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.29.

Logan Rios, OF/SS, Delavan-Darien, 2018
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitting OF/SS with a small, athletic frame. Defensively in the outfield has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Plays thru the ball with athletic actions. Throws showed carry throwing 84 mph from the outfield. In the infield arm action is shorter with slower actions, threw 78 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a wide base with an arm bar load, closes off on stride. Uphill swing path with average bat speed. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. 7.23 runner in the 60.

Nick Sterman, OF, West Bend West, 2018
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting outfielder with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a balanced, open setup. Short stride back to even, hands do the work. Line drive, pull hitter with stiff rhythm. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.37. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Accurate throws, threw 79 mph from the outfield.

Jacob Stucky, OF, Sussex Hamilton, 2018
5-foot-10, 16-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork. Threw 79 mph from the outfield. At the plate Hits from a tall, narrow setup with a deep leg kick behind his back foot, inconsistent stride out front. Short, uphill swing path. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee.

Blake Thiesse, RHP/OF, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau, 2018
6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a lanky, projectable frame. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long, loose, quick arm action. Drop and drive delivery with some effort and a closed toe landing. Fastball showed heavy sinking action at 80-82 topping out at 83 mph. Curveball has 10-4 shape with sharp, late breaking action. Curveball is thrown aggressively at 64-66 mph. Changeup flashed run and cutting action at 71-73 mph. Defensively has a long, loose arm action. Accurate throws with carry throwing 84 mph from the outfield. At the plate hits from a narrow, closed setup with average balance. Line drive hitter with a level swing path. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.51.

Jordan VonBehren, OF/RHP, DeForest, 2018
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitting OF/RHP. At the plate hits from a balanced, open setup. Short, linear stride with average balance. Line drive, pull hitter with a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.10. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Fields the ball deep. Throws showed carry throwing 82 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall delivery with regular effort. Works in line with home plate with a square landing. Works fast. Fastball showed running action at 77-79 topping out at 80 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape at 65-73 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup that showed running action at 69-73 mph.
