Southern Wisconsin Open: Outfielder Analysis

By Wisconsin Staff

On Oct. 19, the PBR Wisconsin team hosted its annual fall showcase, the Southern Wisconsin Open, at STiKS Academy where 60 high school-level prospects participated in the final Wisconsin showcase of 2019.

Immediately following the showcase, we posted some rapid analysis inside our Quick Hits post and then dissected all of our measured data in our Statistical Analysis.

Today, we continue to roll out our position-by-position analysis with the day’s outfielders. We’ve ranked the top-five below, including three 2022 talents who really earned some added attention. Also, uncommitted senior Xavier Schreiber (McFarland) looks like a late pop-up inside this class who needs to be on radars ahead. He swings a fast and physical left-handed bat with a strong and athletic build.

For reports on each of the catchers who made it out to our final showcase of the year, continue reading on below.

TOP PROSPECTS

1. Jayce Weber, Arrowhead (WI), 2022
Positional Profile: OF The sophomore showed well in Southern Wisconsin. Weber should be a high follow outfielder in the 2022 class.
Body: 5-foot-10, 160-pounds. Proportional frame with a thick/strong lower half.
Hit: RHH. Wide balanced set up. Loads hands back. Short/small leg kick. uses lower half well and stays balanced. Showed good bat speed. Level path with extension through the zone. Showed the ability to make consistent hard contact producing line drives to both gaps. Fluid repeatable rhythm.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. Produced consistent solid hard contact during his BP round and hit 85mph off the tee.
Arm: RH. OF - 78 mph. Short quick arm action out of the high 3/4 slot. Strong arm produced some carry and accuracy.
Defense: Athletic outfielder flashed slightly above average actions. Quick low shuffle. Clean and quick exchange.
Run: 7.14 runner in the 60.

2. Xavier Schreiber, McFarland (WI), 2020
Positional Profile: OF Quick twitch athletic outfielder with offensive upside. Schreiber could find himself amongst the middle to upper half of the 2020 outfielders.
Body: 6-foot-2, 190-pounds. Strong and built.
Hit: LHH. Slightly open and balanced stance. Minimal load with a slight bat wrap. Short and quick leg kick. Good balance throughout. Showed fast bat speed with his in/out quick swing. Got his hands to the ball with consistent line drive production.
Power: 95 mph exit velocity from the tee. Strong swing during BP and hit 95mph off of the tee. Schreiber is a little stiff in the shoulders but once he learns to relax his upper body, he projects to be a strong middle of the order hitter at the next level.
Arm: LH. OF - 81 mph. Long and loose arm action. Comes out of a high 3/4 slot. Showed some carry and accuracy.
Defense: Flashed slightly above average hands with a clean exchange. His throws are strong but he has room to improve his footwork. If Schreiber can grow into his footwork and get the ball out quicker by eliminating his second set of shuffles, he projects to be a solid outfielder at the college level.
