Top Prospect Showcase: Pitching Analysis

Wrapping up our Top Prospect positional analysis we take a look at the top pitching prospects from the event. Several of the top uncommitted arm were in attendance and made college commitments after the event. One of note is left-hander Jack Collins (Denmark, WI, 2015) who is not in our top ten as he has already completed a year of college baseball. Collins was back on the market after North Dakota dropped their program. The southpaw showed an upper 80’s fastball up to 89 mph and a hard biting breaking ball. Collins recently committed to Central Michigan after the event.

Here’s a look at the top ten arms from the Top Prospect Showcase.

Top Pitching Prospects

1. Trevor Olson, LHP, Chippewa Falls, 2017
6-foot-6, 205-pound left-handed pitcher, long extra-large frame, typical pitcher’s body type. Tall and fall delivery, some rhythm, head occasionally gets off line, regular effort. Arm action is live and loose, whippy projectable arm, high ¾ slot. Fastball showed slight arm side run, flashed feel for the strike zone, 84-87 mph. Curveball has 1/7 shape, sharp action, fastball arm speed, 72-74 mph. Changeup plays with sink, 77-79 mph, near fastball arm speed.

2. Jack Anderson, RHP, Pulaski, 2017
Illinois State commit. 6-foot-6, 215-pound right-handed pitcher, extra-large frame, long limbed, lean build, highly projectable on the mound. Delivery has tempo and athleticism, works on line, tall and fall type. Advanced arm speed, quick and loose, regular path with slight length at times, high ¾ slot. Fastball is straight with life, showed tilt, 85-86 mph, touched 87 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, sharp action, 67-72 mph. Changeup is mostly straight flashing fade to arm side, fastball arm speed, 77-80 mph.  

3. Michael Stupinski, RHP, Fenwick, 2017
6-foot-3, 194-pound right-handed pitcher, athletic build. Athletic delivery, regular effort, slightly closed landing some rhythm. Loose live arm action, high ¾ slot .Fastball is mostly straight, slight action to arm side, showed feel for the zone, sat 86-87 mph, touched 88 mph. Slider has 10/4 action, gradual sweeping action, 69-72 mph, showed feel. Changeup thrown with fastball arm speed, sinking action to arm side, ability to throw for strikes, 71-76 mph.

4. Mike Edwards, RHP, Oak Forest, 2017
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed pitcher, thick solid build. Delivery works down the hill, squared landing, athletic finish. Arm action is long, ¾ slot, quick arm. Fastball has arm side run, ability to command, 85-88 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, flashed sharp action, fastball arm speed, 70-75 mph. Changeup showed fading action, good control, 75-80 mph.

5. Thomas Ginther, RHP, Baraboo, 2017
6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed pitcher, sturdy athletic build. Delivery works with regular effort, short stride, squared landing with rhythm, repeats delivery. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball sits 85-87 mph, showed heavy arm side action, has feel and control. Curveball has 11/5 action, 72-75 mph, flashed hard action. Changeup flashed fade, 74-78 mph. Repeatable three pitch feel.

6. Antonio Saldana, LHP, Joliet Catholic, 2017
Extra-large body type, 6-foot-7, 230-pound left-handed pitcher. Tall and fall delivery, tends to finish third base side. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot, regular effort, quick arm. Fastball has heavy feel, 85-86 mph. Curveball has 1/7 shape, 73-76 mph, flashed feel, throws aggressively. Changeup sinks, stayed down, 82-83 mph, fastball arm speed.

7. Brett Wicklund, RHP, Lane Tech, 2017
Extra-large frame, 6-foot-5, 195-pound right-handed pitcher, long slender build with projection. Delivery is mechanical, with regular effort, stays balanced on line. Arm action is long, high ¾ slot. Fastball has slight running action, heavy feel, 84-85 mph, touched 86 mph. Throws two breaking balls, curveball has steeper shape, 12/6 action, 68-70 mph. Slider sweeps, flashed sharp bite, slot occasionally lowers, 71-73 mph.  

8. Ken Brokop, RHP, Bradley-Bourbonnais, 2017
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, wide squared shouldered. High ¾ arm slot, quick arm, draw can get long and deep behind head, some deception. Works with some effort, athletic delivery. Fastball is straight, 85-86 mph. Curveball played with 11/5 shape, aggressive arm action, 72-75 mph, tight spin. Changeup flashed fade action, 74-77 mph, occasional decelerated arm action.

9. Austin Chapman, RHP, Sacred Heart-Griffin, 2017
6-foot-2, 220-pound right-handed pitcher, average build. Delivery is upright, lacks lower half, easy effort, works on line. Arm action is loose and quick, high ¾ slot. Fastball sat at an easy 85-86 mph, touched 87 mph, slight running action. Curveball has 11/5 shape, gradual action, near fastball arm speed, flashed depth, 68-71 mph. Changeup has fastball arm speed, 78-79 mph, showed feel.

10. Ryan Larsen, RHP, Vernon Hills, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed pitcher, thin lanky frame. Tall and fall delivery, works across body, closed landing, regular effort, some deception. Arm action is short, loose quick arm, high ¾ arm slot. Fastball showed late running action, 84-87 mph showed control. Slider flashed sweep, more backup action, flat short break, 73-76 mph. Changeup is straight, showed feel for the zone, 79-81 mph.

Drew Behling, INF/RHP, Waupun (WI), 2017
6-foot, 200-pound, two-way prospect with a strong frame. Left-handed hitter, present bat speed and pull power; registered an 87 mph exit velocity. Fluid rhythm, long, uphill path and rotational swing. Open setup, pre-pitch load and big leg-kick timing trigger. Defensively, profiles as a corner infielder. Steady hands and clean exchange on the infield. Long arm action, ability to change his slot, throws clocked at 82 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 7.60 laser-timed 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, delivery works with rhythm; stays in line and lands square. Fastball thrown for strikes, straight action and clocked at 80-82 mph, touching 83. Throws a curveball and a slider, feel for both. Slider, thrown from slightly lower slot, 10/4 action, ranged between 67-70 mph. Curveball works 12/6, 65-67 mph.

Charlie Bourbon, RHP/OF, Stevenson, 2017
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery with regular effort. Smooth rhythm with a square landing an athletic finish. Slide step delivery from the stretch. Fastball showed slight running action at 81-84 mph. Curveball has 10-4 shape with sharp breaking action at 74-77 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup that showed sinking action at 77-78 mph for strikes. Defensively has a long, loose arm action form a high ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with a clean exchange. Threw 83 mph from the outfield. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a short stride and good balance. Gap to gap line drive hitter with fluid rhythm. Long swing path. Showed strength through contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.21.

Austin Braund, RHP, Holmen (WI), 2017
6-foot-5, 210-pound right-handed pitcher, extra-large frame, solid build, typical pitcher’s frame. Slight drop and drive type delivery, works on line with some uptempo rhythm, uses slide step from the stretch. Arm action is long, high ¾ slot, loose arm. Fastball sat 82-83 mph, showed feel for the zone. Slider showed sweep, 10/4 action, flashed feel, 66-68 mph. Changeup has sink to arm side, 72-76 mph.  

Todd Brown, RHP/INF, East Aurora, 2017
6-foot, 150-pound, lean, two-way prospect. Profiles best on the mound. Right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, smooth rhythm, stays on-line, lands square and finishes athletically. Arm works long and quick out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball, thrown for strikes, flashed arm-side-run and sat 83-85 mph, touching 86. Curveball, works 11/5 and clocked at 68-71 mph. Changeup, thrown for strikes and clocked at 72-74 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, long and level bat path through the zone and fluid rhythm. Balanced setup, short stride and average balance throughout. Registered an 85 mph exit velocity. Defensively, on the infield, loose arm action from a high ¾ slot and clocked at 81 mph across the diamond. Also, ran a 6.97 laser-timed 60.

Jack Carberry, RHP, Shepard, 2017
6-foot-3, 220-pound right-handed pitcher, large frame. Delivery works with some effort, deceptive actions. Long firm arm action, high draw, over the top slot. Fastball topped at 85 mph, sat 83-84 mph with tilt, mostly straight. Curveball has 12/6 shape, downer action, fastball arm speed, 73-77 mph. Changeup is straight, fastball arm speed, kept down, 78-81 mph.

Jack Collins, LHP, Denmark (WI), 2015
Recent Central Michigan commit with three years eligibility, played freshman year at North Dakota (dropped program). 6-foot-3, 218-pound left-handed pitcher, strong build. Delivery is athletic, squared landing, good rhythm. Arm action is quick and loose, high ¾ slot. Fastball has life and showed control, 87-89 mph. Slider is sharp with 1/7 action, near fastball arm speed, 73-77 mph. Straight changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed, 77-81 mph, good control.

Will Conard, RHP, Green Bay Preble, 2017
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed pitcher, slender wiry frame, live loose body. Delivery works with regular effort, square landing, finishes to first base side. Arm action is quick and loose, over the top slot. Fastball mostly straight, four seam type, topped at 87 mph, sat 84-86 mph. Curveball played 12/6, 66-69 mph. Straight changeup thrown with fastball arm speed, 74-77 mph. Live arm with upside, overall three pitch control can improve.

Mason Coon, LHP, St. Joseph-Ogden, 2017
6-foot-3, 180-pound athletic bodied, left-handed pitcher. Comes from a ¾ window, loose arm action with easy effort. Tall and fall delivery style, stays in line, lands square, finishes athletically. Fastball, sat 81-83 mph. Curveball, slurve like shape, flashed sharp action, registered between 67-69 mph. Straight changeup, near fastball arm speed, sat between 72-74 mph.

Nick Cramer, RHP/OF, Janesville Craig (WI), 2017
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action. Tall and fall, athletic delivery, works in line with home plate. Smooth rhythm with an athletic finish. Three pitch mix for strikes. Fastball was straight at 80-82 mph. Curveball has 12-6 shape at 62-67 mph. Maintained fastball arm speed on changeup wit arm side run at 73-74 mph, has swing and miss potential. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Athletic, rangy actions with a quick, clean exchange. Threw 83 mph from the outfield. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a heel lift stride and good balance. Line drive hitter with a short, level swing path. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.39.

Cameron Cratic, OF/LHP, Madison East(WI), 2017
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitting OF/LHP with a lanky, athletic frame. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Accurate throws with carry throwing 84 mph from the outfield. Athletic actions while playing thru the ball with fluid footwork and a clean exchange. At the plate hits from a tall, slightly open stance. Short stride with good balance. Line drive hitter with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 90 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 6.89. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery with easy effort. Smooth rhythm with an athletic finish. Fastball showed slight running action at 80-82 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape at 67-69 mph. Maintained arm speed on his changeup that showed sinking action at 70-71 mph.

Kurt Dankovich, RHP, Providence Catholic, 2017
6-foot, 185-pound, strong framed, right-handed pitching prospect. Throws from a high ¾ slot, short arm action, regular effort. Tall and fall delivery style, flashed rhythm, hands synchronized with high leg kick, stays in line, lands square, repeats delivery. Fastball, sat 80-81, topped 83 mph. Slider, 10/4 shape, sweeping break, ranged between 65-69 mph. Changeup, registered between 72-74 mph.

Justin Foy, RHP, Rockridge, 2017
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, lanky live frame, projectable arm. Delivery is balanced and on line, athletic delivery that repeats well. Arm action is easy and loose, high ¾ slot, quick arm. Showed feel for four pitches. Fastball has slight running action, showed good feel for the zone, 83-85 mph, touched 86 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, gradual action, ability to drop for strikes. 64-67 mph. Slider showed 10/4 sweeping action, flashed bite, 70-71 mph, showed tighter action than curveball. Changeup fades slightly 73-76 mph, near fastball arm speed.

Benjamin Graham, RHP/OF, Mukwonago (WI), 2017
5-foot-11, 210-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF. On the mound works form a high 3/4 arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery, works in line with home plate with easy effort. Upright finish. Fastball was straight at 80-81 topping out at 82 mph for strikes. Curveball has 12-6 shape with loose rotation at 69-71 mph. Slows arm on changeup that flashed fading action at 72-75 mph. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride. Fluid rhythm with a long, uphill swing path and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 88 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.03. Defensively has a long arm action from a high 3.4 arm slot. Accurate throws with carry throwing 86 mph from the outfield. Plays thru the ball with a long exchange.  

Logan Grunenwald, INF/RHP, Wausau West (WI), 2017
6-foot-3, 192-pound right-handed hitting two-way prospect. Offensively, closed, balanced set up, drop load, leg lift, short stride. Flashed bat speed, long bat path, line drive approach. Recorded an exit velocity of 89 mph. Defensively, short loose arm action, high ¾ slot, flashed carry and accuracy. Clocked at 85 mph across the diamond. 7.18 runner in the 60. On the mound, high ¾ slot, quick arm speed, short arm action. Smooth rhythm, in-line direction, square landing, and athletic finish. Fastball, run, hard action, sat 82-84. Slider, 11/5 action, tight spin, sat 72-77. Changeup, near fastball arm speed, sink movement, sat 75-78.  Showed feel for all three pitches.

Colton Hale, RHP, St. Joseph-Ogden, 2017
6-foot, 170-pound athletically built right-handed pitching prospect. Comes from a high ¾ slot, short quick, easy arm action. Repeatable, tall and fall delivery, stays in line with target, lands square, and finishes athletically. Shows ability to throw three pitches for strikes. Fastball, late run and sink, ranged 84-85 mph. Curveball, near fastball arm speed, slurve like shape with sharp action, ranged between 72-74 mph. Straight change up, near fastball arm speed, sink and slight fade, sat 76-78 mph.

Nathan Hefle, RHP, Germantown, 2017
6-foot, 195-pound right-handed pitcher, average build. Delivery has regular effort, some rhythm. Full arm action, over the top slot. Fastball is straight with some life, mostly down, below the zone with some tilt, sat 85-87 mph, touched 88 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, tight rotation, 71-75 mph, lacked control. Changeup showed sink, ranged 74-81 mph.

Peyton Henry, INF/OF/RHP, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound, right-handed hitting multi-positional prospect. One of the top runners in the event running a 6.85 in the 60. Offensively, balanced set up, short stride, balance on follow through. Fluid rhythm, level path, extension, line drive approach. Recorded an exit velocity of 87 mph. In the outfield, quick exchange. Short arm action, high ¾ slot, showed athleticism. Was clocked at 83 mph. In the infield, quick, clean exchange, high ¾ slot, short action. Clocked at 83 mph. On the mound, over the top angle, quick arm speed, short action. Smooth rhythm, in line direction, square landing, athletic finish. Fastball topped at 83, sitting 80-82. Curveball with 10/4, sweeping action, sat 66-69. Featured a changeup sitting 73-75.

Cameron Hupe, RHP, Mount Carmel, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound, physical right-handed pitcher. Long, over-the-top arm action. Tall and fall delivery style, lands in line, finishes slightly on glove side. Fastball, sat 82-84, topped at 85 mph. Slider, 10/4 shape, ranged between 71-74 mph. Changeup, registered between 71-74 mph.

Jake Jones, RHP, Oak Forest, 2017
Long lanky right-handed pitcher, slender frame, 6-foot-4, 180-pounds. Delivery works directionally, shorter stride with closed landing, upright finish. Arm action is loose and full, high ¾ slot. Fastball showed arm side run with life in the strike zone, sat 82-84 mph, touched 86 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, flashed sharp action, showed tight spin and depth, 69-73 mph. Changeup has feel, ability to control in the zone, flashed sink 70-74 mph.

Hunter Keim, RHP, Rock Island, 2017
6-foot-2, 170-pound, lanky right-handed pitcher. Long and loose arm from a high ¾ slot, quick arm speed. Smooth, rhythmic delivery, stays in line with catcher, lands square with a slightly closed toe, finishes athletically. Fastball, works mostly straight, downhill tilt at times, ranged between 80-83 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, near fastball arm speed, pounded the zone, sat 72-76 mph. Straight changeup, near fastball arm speed, fade, 73-75 mph. Slider, 11/5 shape, ranged between 74-77 mph.

Brandon Komar, RHP/INF, Elkhorn Area (WI), 2017
6-foot, 182-pound, two-way prospect with a strong lower half. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, flashed three-pitch feel. Delivery works up-tempo, some rhythm, stays in-line, lands square and finishes athletically. Loose, quick arm action out of a high ¾ window. Fastball, thrown for strikes, mainly straight action, sat 81-83 mph, touching 84. Feel for curveball, flashed depth, 11/5 shape, sharp action and ranged between 67-73 mph. Changeup thrown for strikes, arm-side-run and sat 74-77 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, strength through contact; registered a 92 mph exit velocity from a tee. Flashed fluid rhythm, loose hands, and level bat path at times. Balanced setup, smooth load and leg-lift timing trigger. Defensively, profiles as a third baseman. Soft hands, athletic fielding position and a clean exchange. Loose arm, flashed carry across the diamond, clocked at 83 mph. Also, ran a 7.59 laser-timed 60.

Jack Kraus, C/RHP, Neenah (WI), 2017
6-foot-2, 215-pound catcher, large build with some physicality. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, smooth loading action, short stride. Simple approach with bat strength. Fast bat with pop, 95 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played short and over the top, 77 mph out of the crouch. Showed softer hands, exchange is clean, willing blocker. Pop times registered at 2.01-2.08. On the mound delivery worked in rhythm, high ¾ slot with long arm action. Fastball is mostly straight, worked at 82-85 mph. Curveball has gradual action on 11/5 plane, 68-72 mph. Changeup showed fade, near fastball arm speed, showed control of the zone, 74-78 mph.

Jonah Landowski, LHP/OF, Oconomowoc (WI), 2017
5-foot-10, 180-pound left-handed hitting LHP/OF with a strong frame. On the mound works from a high 3/4 arm angle with a long, quick arm action. Drop and drive, online delivery with an athletic finish and smooth rhythm. Gets good tilt on fastball with running action at 83-85 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape at 66-71 mph. Fastball arm speed on changeup working down in the zone at 74-77 mph. Knuckleball is a plus offering at 65-67 mph for strikes. Defensively in the outfield showed a plus arm throwing 89 mph with carry. Athletic actions, playing thru the ball the fluid footwork and good crow hop. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a short, leg kick stride. Pull hitter with a short swing path and a fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.32.

Kevin Lane, RHP, Sandburg, 2017
6-foot-4, 230-pound right-handed pitcher. Tall and fall delivery, simple and works down the hill. Arm action is loose, high ¾ slot. Showed ability to pound the zone. Fastball sat 80-81 mph, cut action with good control. Slider has 10/4 shape, flashed sharp sweeping action, 70-73 mph, swing and miss potential. Changeup has feel, fading action, 75-76 mph.

Brad Larsen, RHP, Vernon Hills, 2017
6-foot-2, 200-pound, big bodied right-handed pitcher. Over-the-top arm slot, short arm action with regular effort. Stays in line, lands square, finishes athletic. Throws three pitches for strikes. Fastball, straight, downhill tilt, 79-81, topped 82 mph. Curveball, 12/6, flashed depth, ranged between 68-69 mph. Changeup, near fastball arm speed, slight sink, registered between 75-77 mph.

Carter Lawler, RHP, Hampshire, 2017
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher, solid build with some projectability. Tall and fall delivery, works in line, some effort. Arm action is long, loose, showed arm speed, ¾ slot. Fastball has running action, 84-85 mph. Showed two breaking balls, both had slurve type action, curveball sat 69-72 mph, slider is 70-72 mph. Changeup is straight, 76-77 mph.

Westin Muir, RHP, St. Charles North, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound projectable, lanky right-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ window, short, quick arm with regular effort. Drop and drive delivery style, stays in line, lands square with a slight open toe. Fastball, late, slight arm side run, registered between 82-83 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, early action with some depth, pounded the bottom half of the zone, sat 65-68 mph. Split changeup, near fastball arm speed, sink and fade, controlled in the zone, ranged 71-74 mph.

Charlie Peterson, RHP, Waukesha South (WI), 2017
6-foot-3, 185-pound, long limbed, athletic right-handed pitcher. Works out of a high ¾ window, long and loose arm action with regular effort. Clean and repeatable drop and drive delivery, stays in line, lands square, finishes athletically. Fastball, slight run and sink, ranged between 79-81 and topped 82 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape, near fastball arm speed, flashed depth, pounded the zone, sat between 67-70 mph. Changeup, near fastball arm speed, fade, controlled in the zone, sat 74-76.  

Paul Petit, INF/OF/RHP, Eau Claire Regis (WI), 2017
6-foot, 175-pound, right-handed hitting multi-positional prospect. At the plate, balanced set up, short, leg lift stride, balance on follow through. Fluid rhythm, flashed bat speed, short path, line drive, opposite field approach. Recorded an exit velocity of 95 mph. In the outfield, showed athleticism, worked through the ball. Long arm action, over the top arm action, flashed some carry. Clocked at 85 mph from the outfield. In the infield, flashed a clean exchange, showed athleticism at position. Shorter arm action, over the top slot, flashed carry. Clocked at 80 mph across the diamond. On the mound, over the top slot, long action, tall balance, regular effort. Rhythm, in line direction, athletic finish. Fastball, topped at 84, sat 81-83. Curveball, sat 67-71, 11/5 shape, tight spin, late action. Changeup, sat 72-73, near fastball arm speed.

Joe Prestamer, RHP, Lincoln-Way North, 2017
6-foot, 170-pound well-proportioned, right-handed pitching prospect. Throws from a high ¾ window, long arm action with some effort. Stays in line with the plate, lands square. Fastball, slight arm side run, sat 84-85 mph. Curveball, near fastball arm speed, 10/4 sweeping breaking ball, sat 63-66. Changeup, fastball arm speed, some fade, ranged between 80-82 mph.

Justin Reinkall, RHP/INF, Superior (WI), 2017
6-foot-2, 178-pound right-handed hitting two-way player. Offensively, balance set up, leg kick stride, lower half, balance on follow through. Bat speed, longer bat path, line drive approach. Recorded an exit velocity of 86 mph. Defensively, athleticism at position. Short arm action, over the top slot, flashed accuracy with carry. Clocked at 83 mph across the diamond. 7.12 runner in the 60. On the mound, high ¾ arm slot, quick arm speed, long, loose arm action with rhythm. Fastball, run, slight action, thrown for strikes, sat 84-85 mph. Curveball, 12/6 shape, feel, near fastball arm speed, sat 70-72 mph. Changeup, fade, sat 71-73 mph.

Marshall Rice, RHP, Geneseo, 2017
