Underclass Trials: Catcher Analysis

The Underclass Trails took place on June 22nd at the Rock in Franklin, WI. Today we begin analysis of the event with the catchers. 2019 C Connor Handel has a solid all around day behind having the best pop times at the event at 2.06-2.14 and tied for the second best catcher velocity at 73 mph from the crouch. At the plate he recorded the second best exit velocity of the event at 89 mph.

Masen Beatty, C, Pewaukee, 2019
5-foot-11, 172-pound left-handed hitting catcher with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a short stride and fair balance. Gap to gap hitter with average bat speed. Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.72. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Slow exchange with heavy footwork. Popped 2.30-2.36 and threw 69 mph from the crouch.

Trevor Benz, C/3B, Hale, 2018
5-foot-9, 186-pound, think bodied prospect. Offensively, open stance, leg kick timing mechanism. Flashed bat speed, pull side approach; exit velocity clocked at 84 mph. Behind the plate, throws from an over the top slot, short arm action, registered throws at 70 mph with pop times ranging between 2.11-2.20. Across the diamond, clocked in throws at 71 mph. Also, ran a 8.07 laser timed 60.

Jordan Brawner, C, Washington Park, 2018
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot, throws showed carry. Gains ground towards second base on throws. Popped 2.15-2.26 and threw 73 mph from the crouch. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly closed setup. Short toe tap stride with a slight collapse on the backside. Long, level swing path with average bat speed. 73 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.21.

Eli Davila, C/OF, Oshkosh North, 2019
5-foot-7, 140-pound catcher. Behind the plate, high ¾ slot, short arm action; recorded pop times between 2.11-2.18, throws clocked at 65 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, open setup, leg kick timing trigger; exit velocity recorded at 70 mph. Also, ran a 7.88 laser timed 60.

Stevie Diderrich, C/INF, Oconomowoc, 2018
5-foot-7, 150-pound, strong bodied prospect. Offensively, right-handed hitter, hits from a tall, open setup, back side load, maintains balance through the hitting zone, fluid rhythm; exit velocity clocked at 83 mph, but seen up to 91 mph at prior events. In the field, soft hands, athletic actions, plays through the baseball. Loose, high ¾ slot, accurate throws with carry. Clocked at 79 mph across the diamond. Behind the plate, registered throws to second at 72 mph and pop times between 2.08-2.13. Also, ran a 7.63 laser timed 60. 

Chase Doebert, C/INF, Mount Horeb, 2018
5-foot-7, 150-pound, left-handed hitting prospect. Offensively, balanced setup, short stride, uphill bat path; exit velocity recorded at 66 mph. Defensively, solid backstop, blocks the baseball, short, high ¾ arm slot; registered throws to second base at 69 mph. Recorded pop times between 2.26 and 2.32. From the infield, registered throws at 70 mph. Offensively, short stride, uphill bat path; exit velocity clocked at 66 mph off of a tee. Also, ran an 8.3 laser timed 60.

Isaac Gerhardt, C/OF, Hortonville, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound, athletic, left-handed hitting catcher. Offensively, open setup, bat speed, short level bat path, line drive approach; exit velocity clocked at 80 mph. Defensively, short arm action, registered throws at 69 mph to second base. Pop times recorded between 2.25-2.39. Also, ran a 7.46 laser timed 60.

Trey Gordon, C/SS, Barneveld, 2019
5-foot-7, 145-pound prospect. Offensively, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, short stride. Long, uphill bat path; exit velocity registered at 77 mph. Defensively, high ¾ slot, short arm action, pop times recorded between 2.33-2.40. Throws clocked at 65 mph from the crouch. Also, ran an 8.36 laser timed 60.

Connor Handel, C/RHP, Edgewood, 2019
5-foot-11, 182-pound right-handed hitting C/SSRHP with a solid frame. At the plate hits from an open stance with an arm bar load and leg kick stride. Pull, power hitter with a long, uphill swing path. Fast bat with loose hands. Showed strength thru contact with 89 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.55. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Throws showed carry out of the crouch at 73 mph. Quick footwork out of the crouch gaining ground towards second base. Popped 2.06-2.14. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall, online delivery with a square landing and athletic finish. Smooth rhythm with good balance. Fastball was straight at 78-81 mph. Curveball has short sweeping action at 62-65 mph. Maintains fastball arm speed on changeup that showed running and sinking life at 70-74 mph.

Jake Hebert, C, Bay Port, 2018
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a lanky frame. Offensively hits from a tall, open stance with a handys drop load with a leg kick stride. Pull hitter with a loose, whippy swing and a fast bat. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.54. Defensively has a loose arm action from an over the top slot with accurate throws. Quick footwork behind the plate. Tall receiver. Popped 2.15-2.19 and threw 70 mph from the crouch.

Adam Mitchell, C/3B, Lake Mills, 2019
5-foot-8, 150-pound catcher. Offensively, right-handed hitter, wide setup, flashed strength. Long, uphill bat path, pull side approach; exit velocity clocked at 77. Defensively, short arm action, recorded pop times at 2.36-2.40, throws to second base clocked at 65 mph. Also, ran a 8.36 laser timed 60.

 

Jack Pawlak, C, Grafton, 2018
6-foot-2, 225-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a solid, strong frame. At the plate hits from a wide base with a short, heel lift stride with good balance. Short path with a fast bat. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.83. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Fluid footwork behind the plate. Throws showed carry form the crouch at 74 mph. Popped 2.15-2.3.

Alec Spang, C/3B, Union Grove, 2018
5-foot-10, 175-pound, strong bodied catcher. Defensively, short arm action, throws clocked at 70 mph from the crouch. Popped off times at 2.10-2.19 to second base. Offensively, right-handed hitter, narrow set up, uphill bat path; exit velocity clocked at 81 mph. Also, ran a 7.96 laser timed 60.
