Unsigned Senior Games: Catching Analysis

The stats are posted, the videos are uploaded, and here comes the complete event analysis. Throughout the week we will be breaking down the Unsigned Senior Games from September 20 at Kapco Park position by position. Leading off the week we take a look at the catchers where we saw several backstops with the ability to play at the next level. Here’s a look at the top three.

Top Catching Prospects

1. Trevor Hogenson, C, St. Xavier, 2016
Hogenson stood out at the Unsigned Senior Games as one of the top all-around backstops. He showed an advanced ability to receive the baseball with a presence behind the plate that can control a ballgame. A compact build at 5-foot-8, 180-pounds he has a sturdy setup behind the plate. Defensively plays with soft hands, fluid footwork and an overall athletic defender. Arm action is short, over the top and accurate on the bag showing some carry (74 mph). Pop times ranged 2.11-2.14. Offensively hits from an open stance with a slight leg kick stride. Spray type hitter, level path with bat speed. 88 mph exit velocity from the tee. Hogenson’s all-around skill set makes him an attractive option at the next level.

2. Trent Bauer, C, Green Bay East, 2016
6-foot-3, 165-pound, left-handed hitting catcher with a lanky frame. Currently ranked No. 49 in the Wisconsin Class of 2016. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a leg kick stride and good balance. Loose, athletic swing with consistent contact. Line drive gap-to-gap hitter with fluid rhythm and a fast bat. Went 1-2 in game with a triple to the right centerfield gap. Showed strength thru contact with 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Popped 2.29-2.33 and threw 73 mph from the crouch.

3. Cody Goggins, C, St. Johns Northwestern Military Academy, 2016
6-foot, 185-pound, left-handed hitting catcher. Currently ranked No. 100 in the Wisconsin Class of 2016. Offensively hits from an open stance, bars on load with a short stride. Up the middle approach with a short swing path and fast bat. In game went 1-2 with a double.  Showed strength thru contact with 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Home to first at 4.69. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Fluid footwork with average hands. Popped 2.09-2.32 and threw 72 mph from the crouch.

Gannon Goldensoph, C, Oak Creek, 2016
5-foot-11, 180-pound, left-handed hitting catcher. Currently ranked No. 54 in the Wisconsin Class of 2016. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Fluid footwork with online, accurate throws. Popped 2.07-2.26 and threw 71 mph from the crouch. Offensively hits from an open stance, armload to backside with a short stride. Gap to gap hitter with an uphill swing path. Went 1-2 in game with a single. 73 mph exit velocity from a tee. Home to first at 4.76.

Jake Husnick, C, Antigo, 2016
6-foot, 185-pound catcher, strong solid build, sturdy body composition. Defensively played directionally out of the chute, gets long strided can shorten up footwork. Pop times ranged 2.12-2.27. Arm works typical to a catcher, short high ¾ slot, short release, 75 mph arm strength. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, wider base. Front foot type hitter, occasionally lunges, slightly uphill path that flashed occasional pop. Some bat strength, 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. 4.87 runner down the line.

Jonathan Offenbacher, C, Wisconsin Lutheran, 2016
Lanky frame, thin with some projection, 6-foot-1, 180-pound catcher. Defensively arm played short and over the top, average arm strength, 72 mph arm strength. Slight misdirection out of the chute, can improve accuracy with better direction, hands played. Pop times ranged 2.18-2.26. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride. Path is short to the baseball, average bat speed, steep path at times. 77 mph exit velocity from the tee.

Brooks Ralph, C, Homestead, 2016
5-foot-9, 180-pound, right-handed hitting catcher. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and average balance. Pull hitter with a good approach and short swing path. Went 1-2 in game with a single. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Home to first at 4.76. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top arm slot. Solid footwork with a quick transfer. Popped 2.29-2.33 and threw 70 mph from the crouch.

Jack Sarnowski, C, Muskego, 2016
5-foot-8, 160-pound, right-handed hitting catcher with a small frame. Offensively hits from a wide balanced setup. Deep load to backside with a short toe tap stride. Uphill swing path, aggressive swings looking to lift. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Home to first at 4.19. Defensively has a short arm action form an over the top arm slot. Stand and throw with a clean exchange. Popped 2.17-2.26 and threw 71 mph form the crouch.
