WIAA Diamond Notes: Week 3

Each week, WIAA coaches around the state submit to us their nominations for our weekly PBR WIAA Player of the Week honor. On Wednesday, we awarded the Week 2 Player of the Week honor to INF/RHP Caleb Guden (Medford, 2022)

In Week 3, Guden was 14-for-18 at the plate with seven doubles, two triples, and a home run that generated 13 RBIs, all from the lead-off spot in the daily lineup. Naturally, his aptitude for finding the open field also helped him touch home plate 12 times last week, and he was a single short of the cycle in Saturday’s win at East Troy.

As if that weren’t enough, Guden has also looked sharp from the mound, and his four innings pitched on Friday against Tomahawk earned him the win, and he K’d four over that span with just one earned run allowed – he actually drove in more runs (2) than the earned ones he allowed in Saturday’s contest.

There were a number of other impressive performances that were in the mix for the award and deserve recognition. Here’s a look at some of the most notable.

COACHES NOTE: If you are interested in submitting a player for our Week 4 POTW award (statistics counted from May 17 through 22), please nominate a player by emailing [email protected] or reply to our 'reminder' email distributed Sunday afternoon; please include relevant statistics to accompany your nomination. We can only accept nominations on behalf of WIAA coaches, thank you.

DIAMOND NOTES: WEEK 3

+ Tristan Ellis, Greendale, 2022: A Purdue commit, Ellis went 7-for-13 at the plate with two extra-base hits, six RBIs, and seven runs scored in four games at the top of this Greendale lineup. He also pitched four scoreless innings against Wisconsin Lutheran, striking out four en route to victory.

+ Caden Capomaccio, Notre Dame Academy, 2022: Capomaccio has been on a tear to start the year from a pitching standpoint, as the Tritons’ unquestioned ace struck out 19 batters across 12.2 scoreless innings last week. He also went 5-for-11 at the plate with two RBIs, three walks, and three stolen bases.

+ Cade Milton, Notre Dame Academy, 2022: The Tritons’ three-hole hitter, Milton went 6-for-16 at the plate in week three, driving in nine runs and homering once. He also walked twice and stole three bags.

+ Noah Miller, Ozaukee, 2021: Currently the top-ranked senior in the state, Miller did it all for Ozaukee’s offense last week. He went 8-for-12 with four extra-base hits, including a home run, and drove in 10 runs without striking out once. Miller also scored eight runs for the Warriors and continues to trend upward from an MLB Draft standpoint.

+ Jared Lessman, St. Croix Falls, 2021: Lessman has been one of the state’s top performers on the mound thus far and the Iowa Western CC commit continued his dominance for the Saints last week. In his lone start, Lessman struck out 17 batters en route to a complete game no-hitter against the Prescott Cardinals.

+ Tyler Soule, Oregon, 2022: Soule had quite the week for Oregon, going 9-for-12 with five extra-base hits; two triples, two doubles, and a home run. Soule also drove in six runs and scored seven over a three game span.

+ DaShaun Ames, Cumberland, 2021: In a week that saw Cumberland go 4-0 with an upset victory over Eau Claire Memorial, Ames’ was at the forefront of the Beavers’ offensive success. Committed to play football at the next level, Ames went 5-for-9, good for a .556 batting average, in four games with two doubles and five RBIs.

+ Torin Byrnes, Kenosha Tremper, 2022: Byrnes has molded himself into a true frontline starter for the Trojans, going the distance in a victory against conference rival Indian Trail on Monday, May 10th. He struck out eight batters and allowed just one earned run in that outing, following it up with a four strikeout performance in just 1.1 innings against Marquette on Saturday night.

+ Trett Joles, Boyceville, 2021: Joles has swung a hot bat for the No. 23 ranked Bulldogs all spring and he had arguably his best stretch throughout week three. Committed to Indiana State, Joles went 7-for-11 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in eight runs total. He also stole six bases and scored eight runs out of the leadoff spot for undefeated Boyceville.

+ Theo Zeidler, Bay Port, 2022: Zeidler is slowly building an intriguing resume for Player of the Year, as the recent Bradley commit had a strong all-around week for the Pirates. He made two starts on the mound, striking out 13 batters across nine total innings and helped lead Bay Port to victory in both of those games. Offensively, Zeidler went 9-for-19 with 10 RBIs, three doubles, a triple, and a grand slam. It was him who hit the walkoff to defeat De Pere in the 13-inning clash between those two teams that helped cap off an undefeated week for the Pirates.
