Week 1 & 2 Diamond Notes

Each week, WIAA coaches around the state submit to us their nominations for the PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week honor. On Wednesday, we awarded the first award of the year, from Weeks 1 & 2, to RHP/3B Mitch Voit (Whitefish Bay, 2022; Michigan), who helped to lead the Blue Dukes to a hot start from both sides of the ball, as he was responsible for an Opening Day no-hitter and he went on to collect eight hits, 10 RBIs, and seven steals.

But, Voit's performance wasn't the only one to earn POTW consideration or additional recognition from the first two weeks of the season. Here’s a look at some of the most notable:

Weeks 1 & 2 DIAMOND NOTES

Adan Martinez-Ponce RHP / Racine Horlick, WI / 2022

Ponce was dominant on the mound to say the least in Racine Horlick’s game against No. 9 Oak Creek. In his seven innings of work, Ponce scattered five hits and only allowed one run to get on the board. He was a major factor in Horlick’s walk-off win against a talented Oak Creek squad.

Andrew Justus 2B / SS / Greendale, WI / 2022

Justus, a Milwaukee School of Engineering commit, has had a really hot start to the 2022 season and been a senior leader for No. 19 Greendale. At the plate, Justus has a batting average of .714, with 11 RBIs in six games. He has also logged four innings on the mound and has gave up only 2 runs. Justus is a key contributor to this talented Greendale squad and if he can this up, Greendale will be in a very good spot when playoffs roll around. 

Ayden Schauer RHP / Watertown, WI / 2022

Schauer is off to great start on the mound for Watertown, going 2-0 in his first two starts. He has tallied 9 ⅓ innings thus far, and in those innings he has only allowed one earned run and tallying 14 strikeouts. Schauer is also off to a hot start at the plate, slashing .333/.636/1.136. Whether is at the plate or on the mound, Schauer has been a major contributor to the Watertown squad. 

Brandon Black 1B / RHP / Bay Port, WI / 2022

Black, a UW-Whitewater commit, has been on fire while at the plate. Currently, Black has a batting average of .500 (9-18) which includes three doubles and has also contributed four RBIs. So far, Black has been one of the standout performers for a talented Bay Port squad and with some injuries plaguing their lineup, the team will continue to look to Black for runs. 

Brennan Huber 2B / OF / Lincoln , WI / 2023

In Lincoln’s doubheader against Chippewa Falls, Huber went 6-for-9 at the plate. His six hits included a triple and two homeruns, one being a grand slam. Huber also tallied nine RBIs and stole two bags. Huber’s performance is one of the best we have seen thus far. 

Carson Klaus RHP / SS / Adams Friendship, WI / 2022


Klaus’ two-way talent has been on display early on in the 2022 season. At the plate he went 5-12 at the plate this past week with two doubles, a triple, six runs scored, 4 stolen bases, and 4 RBI's. He also earned 3 saves on the mound while pitching in 6 2/3 innings and striking out 17 batters. He gave up one hit and one run in his three appearances. Against No. 21 Viroqua Klaus came into the game in a big spot. With a 2-1 lead, bases loaded and one out, he struck out the two batters he faced in 8 pitches to get Adams Friendship out of the jam and would throw two more scoreless innings afterwards.

Cole Bensen RHP / OF / Bay Port, WI / 2023

This winter Bensen came away a winner from our Green Bay Preseason ID event and has carried it into the spring. In Bensen’s 11.1 innings on the mound, he has racked up 13 strikeouts and logging a 1.85 ERA. At the plate, Bensen is currently batting .421 which includes a triple and four RBIs. 

Cole Selvig RHP / 3B / Regis, WI / 2023

Selvig, a Texas commit, has been dominant on the mound for Eau Claire Regis highlighted by his performance vs Mauston. The future Longhorn pitched four shutout innings in Regis’ 14-0 victory. Selvig ended with 10 strikeouts, nine of them coming in a row, and giving up just one hit. 

Gavin Gawronski RHP / OF / Marquette University, WI / 2022

Gawronski has been a key contributor for a undefeated Marquette squad. On the mound, Gawronski is 2-0 and has tallied 14 strikeouts in just seven innings pitched. He is doing this on a very talented Marquette team who is currently inside our Power 25 and against quality opponents as well.

Jack Walter RHP / OF / Oregon, WI / 2022

 Walter, a UW-Platteville commit, has only given up one earned run in his 11 innings pitched this year. He started off the season with a 2-0 record and one of the games being a complete game. In his 11 innings of work, he has scattered 5 hits, with an era of .636. 

Jacob Granley / Boyceville, WI / 2022

In Boycevilles first game of the season Granley got the start and was spectacular, twirling a combined no-hitter. On the season, Granley has a 2-0 record and has tallied 13 strikeouts in his 6 ⅔ innings of work. Also, he has only allowed three hits will giving up 0 earned runs. 

Ky Mueller LHP / OF / Bay Port, WI / 2022

Mueller, an Eau Claire commit, is off to a great start in the 2022 season. Mueller has logged a batting average of .583 (7-12) which has included two doubles, one triple and four RBIs for a Bay Port squad inside our Power 25 rankings. 

Logan Dobberstein RHP / 3B / Pewaukee , WI / 2022


The Kansas State commit has been spectacular at the plate for a Pewaukee team inside our Power 25 rankings. Dobberstein, a senior has logged a .556 (5-9) batting average and a slugging percentage of 1.222. Throughout Pewaukee’s first few games he has hit a double, triple, homerun and has tallied four RBIs and four runs.

Michael Mulhollon LHP / Westosha Central, WI / 2022

Mulhollon is part of a very talented pitching staff at Westosha Central and it has showed early into the season. To start the season, Mulhollon is 2-0 with 20 strikeouts in those games. His best start came against Delavan where he threw a combined no-hitter with 16 strikeout. Offensively, in his five at-bats he has logged 2 hits and four RBIs. 

Peyton Lee OF / RHP / Edgerton, WI / 2022

Lee, a Winona State commit showcased his talent in Edgertons doubleheader against Marshall. After losing 5 games due to weather Edgerton was able to play Marshall in a doubleheader on Saturday. On the day Lee went 5-6 with 2 doubles and a 3 run HR.  He was the starting pitcher in the first game going 4 innings in a 7-1 victory.  He gave up 2 hits and struck out 8 batters in picking up the win.  He threw 59 pitches with 41 being strikes.  Peyton is a Winona State baseball recruit.

Sam Polyock RHP / OF / Badger , WI / 2024

Polyock has been solid on the mound for Badger to start the season. In his sophomore season, Polyock has logged 5 ⅔ innings of work and allowed three earned runs. He has also tallied 10 strikeouts in those innings. As just a sophomore it's clear that Polyock has the talent to play at the varsity level. 

Tanner White RHP / 2B / Tremper, WI / 2023

White has started off the season on a high note. In his seven at-bats, he has recorded five hits and two RBIs. His hits have included four singles and one double. If White can keep this up, this Trojans squad will be a tough opponent for any team to play. 

Tyler Butina 1B / RHP / Jefferson, WI / 2023

Last year as just a sophomore, Butina was a key contributor to a Jefferson team that made it to state. Now with another year of experience, the Central Michigan commit is off and running to start the 2022 season. In his 10 at-bats, Butina has racked up 6 hits, three doubles and one triple and his slash line is .600/.750/1.100. Jefferson certainly likes the show Butina has been putting on this year and he will need to keep it up if Jefferson wants to get back to state this year. 

Tyler Deleskiewicz RHP / OF / Lake Geneva Badger, WI / 2022

Deleskiewicz, a UW-Milwaukee commit, was fantastic in his first start of the year. In his five innings of work, Deleskiewicz struck out 10 opposing batters. Although he did allow four free base runners via the walk, he only allowed two earned runs. 

Tyler Soule SS / 2B / Oregon , WI / 2022

The UW-Stevens Point commit started off the year strong going 4-7 in his first couple of games. His hits included, 2 doubles and a homerun with five RBIs under his belt. Soule is off to a great start early into the 2022 season.
