Week 3 Diamond Notes

By: Diego Solares

Each week, WIAA coaches around the state submit to us their nominations for the PBR Wisconsin Player of the Week award. On Wednesday, we awarded the honors to INF Brock Lulewicz (Muskego, 2024), who helped lead Muskego to a trio of wins. Lulewicz finished the week with nine hits, including three clutch home runs for the Warrirors.

But, Lulewicz's performance wasn't the only one to earn POTW consideration or additional recognition from the third week of the season. Here's a look at some of the most notable:

DIAMOND NOTES

Jaeden Carstens RHP / Neenah, WI / 2022

Neenah only played one game last week, but Carstens impressed in his first outing this spring and helped propel the Rockets to victory over an upper-tier Hortonville team. Carstens scattered one hit and walked just one in 5 ⅔ innings, striking out 11 batters in the process. He is committed to Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Ryder Derouin C / RHP / Wisconsin Lutheran, WI / 2022

Committed to Chandler-Gilbert CC, Derouin helped lead Wisconsin Lutheran to three key wins over Pius XI, Cudahy, and St. Thomas More. He went 6-for-12 at the plate with six RBIs in total, including a pair of doubles and home runs.

Caleb Guden SS / RHP / Medford, WI / 2022

Guden had quite the week for the Raiders, racking up six hits in 12 at-bats. He doubled, tripled, and homered three times, two of which came at The Rock during our High School Invitational. The Air Force commit totaled 18 bases and drove in seven runs, scoring eight times on his own as well.

Ethan Hindle SS / 2B / Arrowhead, WI / 2023

Hindle is one of the state’s top junior prospects and the Kentucky commit looks every bit the part of a potential all-state type of player. Hindle homered last week for Arrowhead and doubled twice, driving in five runs and scoring four times on his own.

Tanner Isaacson OF / OF / Horlick, WI / 2022

Isaacson picked up two key hits against Tremper last Tuesday. He doubled and later launched a three-run home run, helping the Rebels defeat one of their rivals.

Evan Iwinski SS / RHP / Franklin, WI / 2022

Franklin only played one game last week due to weather, but Iwinski had a quality two-way showing nonetheless. The Madison JC commit struck seven out across three nearly perfect innings, his only blemish being a walk, and he brought six runs home at the plate, finishing with three hits.

Garrett Kay OF / RHP / Waterford, WI / 2023

Kay’s a hot commodity across the state right now, rising into the top-15 in our updated class of 2023 rankings as the state’s top uncommitted junior. He doubled twice and homered last week, routinely finding the barrel while pacing the Waterford offense thus far into the spring.

Max Northrop OF / LHP / Waterford Union, WI / 2023

Northrop’s clutch two-run blast helped the Wolverines walk-off Burlington last Monday and it was only the start of an impressive week from the uncommitted junior. He finished with four hits and four RBIs, doubling twice while scoring three times. Northrop also stole a bag, showing a do-it-all type of skill-set across three games.

Conner Robertson RHP / 3B / Dominican, WI / 2022

Robertson positively contributed on both sides of the ball for Dominican, earning his way into ‘Player of the Week’ consideration. He helped lead Dominican to a 9-1 victory last Monday, bringing in two runs at the plate. Robertson drew the start for Dominican last Tuesday on the mound and dazzled, retiring 15 batters via strikeout and scattering two hits across 6 ⅔ innings, surrendering one earned run in the process. He doubled twice and homered at the plate in that same game, driving in four and scoring twice. Robertson is committed to Lawrence University.

Nate Snead RHP / SS / South Milwaukee, WI / 2022

Snead’s ascension to an elite prospect in Wisconsin’s 2022 class over the last year has been quite impressive, now ranked at sixth overall in the entire state. He had arguably the most dominant outing of his high school career last week, throwing five perfect innings against Cudahy. Snead struck out 14 batters in total, including the first 12 batters of the game, and needed only 60 pitches to accomplish this feat. The Iowa Western CC commit also added a single and double at the plate, driving in a pair of runs.

Kaleb Steinmetz SS / 2B / William Horlick, WI / 2023

Steinmetz also played a pivotal role in Horlick defeating Tremper last week, racking up three hits in total and driving in two while also scoring the game winning run.

ADISON TEVZ RHP / 1B / New Berlin Eisenhower, WI / 2022

Tevz has been one of the area’s top performers on the mound this spring and he didn’t slow down at all last week. In five strong innings, Tevz pitched the Lions to a win, punching out 12 batters and only allowing two earned runs. He contributed at the plate as well, going 7-for-13 with two home runs and eight RBIs. Aside from leaving the yard, Tevz doubled twice and tripled, batting .534 on the week.

Will Vaile C / 1B / Greendale , WI / 2022

Vaile’s two-run single in the seventh inning last Thursday propelled Greendale to an essential victory over conference rival Pewaukee. The Wisconsin-Whitewater football commit doubled, homered, and drove in five runs last week.

James Vargas SS / RHP / Arrowhead, WI / 2022

Vargas is a key piece to what Arrowhead is expecting to accomplish this spring and he showed just why last week. The Upper Iowa signee homered twice and finished the week with six RBIs, scoring three runs of his own, too.
