West Milwaukee Preseason I.D.: Statistical Analysis

By Andy Sroka

The second Wisconsin preseason event of 2019 was held over the weekend at STiKS Academy in Waukesha: the West Milwaukee Preseason I.D. We published our instant analysis from the event already – a compilation of the most eye-catching notes coming out of the showcase – but today we’re on to additional analysis, this time from a more statistical perspective.

The biggest storyline coming out of Waukesha were the number of upticks in velocity from a handful of prospects, varying in prospect pedigree coming into Sunday. A collage of former PBR Future Gamers and helium-filled arms dialed up upper-80s and even 90-plus mph marks on the radar gun. See for yourself on the fastball velocity leaderboard below. These pitching prospects were covered in yesterday’s Quick Hits post, and their average velocities suggest that their arms are already near mid-season form, a welcome surprise for a mid-February event.

Elsewhere, there were six prospects who recorded sub-7.00 times in the 60-yard dash, three of whom were sophomores. Junior OF Alex Ryan (Lakeside Lutheran), the top uncommitted 2020 in the state, was his same athletic self – and that’s a good thing. He jumps off the page statistically and you’ll see that for yourself in each of the measured categories he participated in below. Ryan ran the fastest 60 of the day, too.

The event marked our first look at junior OF/LHP Dylan Nevar, from Wisconsin Dells, who neatly put together a day in which he ranked near the top of each of the categories he was measured in. His performance as a sophomore last spring forced him onto prospect lists and his skillset is pushing him up rankings boards.

Fellow outfielder Q Phillips (Brookfield East) is a tantalizing sophomore prospect who also is able to shine statistically in the showcase setting. He’s a top-10-ranked 2021 in the state and has advanced tools across the board.

Also, skim the board below for a look at additional impact sophomores within this 2021 class – there are highly skilled sophomores scattered throughout the top of the day's leaderboards. Prospects like Tyler Hug (Waukesha West), Bobby Ball (Brookfield Central), Drew Stippich (Kettle Moraine), and Eli Hoyt (Waukesha South) are stirring the state's 2021 class into becoming one of the brightest in the region.
