Western Wisconsin Open: Blast Motion Board

Diego Solares
Staff Writer, Associate Scout

On Monday, July 5, the PBR Wisconsin staff made the trip back up to Eau Claire, WI, to host the Western Wisconsin Open at Carson Park, home of the Northwoods League’s Eau Claire Express.

This open event to all high school graduating classes helped our staff identify talent in this specific area of the state for future invite-only events, including the PBR Future Games

We kicked off our post-event coverage by looking at the statistical standouts from the event inside our traditional stat story. Then, with the help of our technological partners, we looked at the pitch metrics and batted ball data gathered from the showcase, found inside our TrackMan Files.

Today, with the help of our Blast Motion sensors, we're analyzing the swing metrics measured from this event, concluding our post-event content coverage.

Hand Speed (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (max)
1 Kell Piggott WI Superior 2022 RHP 27.5 mph
2 Ryan Smith WI Chetek Weyerhaeuser 2022 C 27.4 mph
3 Ben Land WI Hudson 2022 OF 26.3 mph
4 Mason Stenberg WI Superior 2022 RHP 25.9 mph
5 Will Michalsky WI Wisconsin Dells 2022 SS 25.3 mph
6 Lucas Smith WI Menomonie 2022 SS 24.9 mph
7 Christian Lindow WI Rice Lake 2022 RHP 24.3 mph
8 Julian Torres WI Sun Prairie West 2023 C 24.1 mph
9 Aiden Rosemeyer WI Thorp 2023 SS 24.0 mph

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (avg)
1 Kell Piggott WI Superior 2022 RHP 25.8 mph
2 Ben Land WI Hudson 2022 OF 24.5 mph
3 Mason Stenberg WI Superior 2022 RHP 24.3 mph

6 Lucas Smith WI Menomonie 2022 SS 23.4 mph
7 Aiden Rosemeyer WI Thorp 2023 SS 23.3 mph

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed (Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Kell Piggott WI Superior 2022 RHP 76.4 mph
2 Aiden Rosemeyer WI Thorp 2023 SS 75.4 mph
3 Christian Lindow WI Rice Lake 2022 RHP 71.3 mph
4 Lucas Smith WI Menomonie 2022 SS 71.1 mph
5 Mason Stenberg WI Superior 2022 RHP 71.1 mph
6 Jake Busson WI Hudson 2023 SS 71.1 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (max)
1 Ben Land WI Hudson 2022 OF 29.9 g
2 Bradyn Johnson WI Chippewa Falls 2022 2B 26.8 g
3 Mayson Tester WI Chippewa Falls 2023 SS 23.0 g
4 Ryan Smith WI Chetek Weyerhaeuser 2022 C 22.6 g
5 Lucas Smith WI Menomonie 2022 SS 22.5 g
6 Cole Timmler WI Columbus Catholic 2022 C 22.3 g

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 Ben Land WI Hudson 2022 OF 22.6 g
2 Lucas Smith WI Menomonie 2022 SS 19.9 g
3 Bradyn Johnson WI Chippewa Falls 2022 2B 19.8 g
4 Christian Lindow WI Rice Lake 2022 RHP 17.1 g
5 Mayson Tester WI Chippewa Falls 2023 SS 17.0 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.
