Western Wisconsin Open: Infield Analysis

The Western Wisconsin Open took place on Monday July 10th at Carson Park in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Today we continue the analysis with scouting reports on the infielders. At the end of the week we will roll out the top position players and pitchers from the event.

Scouting Reports (Listed Alphabetically)

Drake Bakkum, RHP/3B, Cochrane-Fountain, 2019
6-ffo, 170-pound right-handed hitting RHP/3B. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short am action. Works exclusively out of the stretch. Fastball sat 71-74 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with loose rotation at 62-63 mph. Changeup blends with fastball and has sinking action at 70-72 mph. At the plate hits from a tall, balanced setup wit a leg kick stride and uphill swing path. 73 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.27. Took drills in the infield, threw 69 mph across.

Billy Brown, 1B, Rice Lake, 2018
6-foot, 225-pound right-handed hitting first baseman with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a tall, setup with a leg kick stride and average balance. Short, uphill swing path. 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.46. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Solid footwork around the bag. Threw 77 mph across the infield.

Caden Dupee, 2B/RHP/C, Ladysmith, 2019
5-foot-9, 140-pound right-handed hitting utility player. At the plate hits from a tall, setup, short stride with fair balance. Long swing path. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.18. Defensively in the infield has a long arm action from a high ¾ arm angle. Long exchange and release. Threw 77 mph across the infield. Behind the plate popped 2.54-2.58 and threw 71 mph from the crouch. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Drop and drive delivery with an open landing. Fastball sat 74-75 topping out at 77 mph. Threw a curveball and a slider. Both have the same breaking action . Curveball sat 66-67 mph, slider sat 64-67 mph.

Tru Dupee, 2B, Ladysmith, 2020
5-foot-6, 125-pound right-handed hitting second baseman. At the plate hits from a balanced setup. Long, level swing path. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.76. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fields the ball deep. Threw 67 mph across the infield.

Drake Flom, SS, Ellsworth, 2018
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a crouched, wide base with a short stride and average balance. Line drive hitter. 72 mph exit velocity form a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.26. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ slot. Threw 71 mph across the infield. 

Mitchell Froehlich, 2B, Eau Claire Memorial, 2018
6-foot, 168-pound left-handed hitting second baseman with a lanky frame. At the plate hits from a tall setup with a smooth load and leg lift stride. Pull hitter with fluid rhythm and  a long, uphill swing path. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.64. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Good body control, plays well on the back hand. Threw 76 mph across the infield.

Blake Fuchs, RHP/2B, Milton, 2018
5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitting RHP/2B. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with high draw out of the glove. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball worked up in the zone at 74-76 topping out at 78 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with short breaking action at 66-69 mph. Changeup sat 68-71 mph. At the plate hits from a tall, slightly open setup. Fair balance with an uphill path. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.31. Defensively has a short arm action from a ¾ slot. Plays thru the ball. Threw 75 mph across the infield.

Dayton Gutsch, SS, Regis, 2018
6-foot, 145-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with a thin, lanky frame. At the plate hits from a balanced, slightly open setup with a smooth load and short stride. Fluid rhythm with loose hands and an uphill swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 6.98. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Athletic actions, plays thru the ball with fluid footwork. Threw 73 mph exit velocity from a tee.

Adam Helgeson, 2B, West Salem, 2018
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitting second baseman. At the plate hits from a crouched setup with a knee jab load and uphill swing path. 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.49. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ slot. Threw 70 mph across the infield.

Cooper Kapanke, 1B, Eau Claire Memorial, 2019
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed hitting first baseman with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a long, toe tap stride. Hard contact in BP with an uphill swing path. 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.45. Defensively has a long arm action from a low ¾ slot. Threw 69 mph across the infield.

Luke LeMay, SS, East Ridge (MN), 2018
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. At the plate hits from an open setup with a drop load and leg kick stride. Pull hitter with a long, uphill swing path. 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.21. Defensively has a loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Throws showed carry across the infield at 78 mph.

Brett Lettner, SS, Gale Ettrick Trempealeau, 2018
6-foot, 160-pound left-handed hitting shortstop with an athletic frame. At the plate hits from a slightly closed setup with fair balance. 76 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.35. Defensively has a short arm action from an over the top slot. Threw 75 mph across the infield.

Jess Ondell, 3B, La Crosse Aquinas, 2020
5-foot-9, 180-pound right-handed hitting third baseman with a strong, compact frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride with good balance. Line drive gap-to-gap hitter with a short, level swing path and fast bat. Showed strength thru contact with 90 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.24. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ slot. Good body control on the run. Threw 72 mph across the infield.

Jacob Salonek, 1B/LHP, Eau Claire Regis, 2018
6-foot-3, 215-pound left-handed hitting 1B/LHP. At the plate hits from a tall setup with a leg lift stride and good balance. Pull, power approach with fluid rhythm. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.52. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Showed feel around the bag at first. Threw 71 mph across the infield. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing. Fastball shows cutting and sinking action at 74-76 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape with short breaking action at 65-69 mph.

Luke Schemenauer, 2B, Chippewa Falls, 2019
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting second baseman. At the plate hits from a tall, open setup with an even stride and average balance. Uphill swing path with a fast bat. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.34. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 69 mph across the infield.

Colton Schraepfer, SS, Pecatonica, 2019
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. At the plate hits from a tall, open setup. Line drive hitter with a level swing path. 73 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.33. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Athletic actions, threw 76 mph across the infield.

Connor Stoik, SS, Eau Claire Memorial, 2019
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop with a thin, lanky frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup, drop load with a short, uphill swing path. 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.42. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 80 mph across the infield.

Max Stubbendick, SS, Hudson, 2018
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Athletic actions with good body control. Threw 71 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a tall, narrow setup with a long stride and average balance. Short, level swing path. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.60.

Jack Stumpf, 1B, Eagan (MN), 2018
6-foot-1, 205-pound left-handed hitting first baseman with a strong frame. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and good balance. Line drive hitter with a fast bat. 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.88. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Slower actions with good feel around the bag. Threw 73 mph across the infield.

Ryan Stunkel, 2B, Thorp, 2019
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting second baseman. At the plate hits form an open setup with a leg kick stride. Long, uphill swing path. 86 mph exit velocity form a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.60. Defensively has a short arm action from a low ¾ slot. Threw 64 mph across the infield.

Reese Vold, OF/RHP/SS, Black River Falls, 2018
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed hitting utility player. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a leg kick stride and good balance. Long, uphill swing path with fluid rhythm. 79 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.17. Defensively took drills in the outfield and infield. Long, loose arm action from a high ¾ slot. Plays thru the ball with a long exchange. Threw 78 mph from the outfield and 77 mph across the infield. On the mound works from a high ¾ slot with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball sat 78 topping out at 80 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape at 65-67 mph. Maintains arm speed on changeup with sinking action at 71-74 mph.

Trevor Wanek, SS, Fennimore, 2019
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. At the plate hits from an open setup with a leg lift stride and fair balance. Long, level swing path. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.45. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 69 mph across the infield.
