Western Wisconsin Open: Quick Hits & Statistical Analysis

On Monday, July 5, the PBR Wisconsin staff made the trip back up to Eau Claire, WI, to host the Western Wisconsin Open at Carson Park, home of the Northwoods League’s Eau Claire Express.

This open event to all high school graduating classes helped our staff identify talent in this specific area of the state for future invite-only events, including the PBR Future Games

We’ll start our post-event coverage today by highlighting a few statistical standouts thanks to all the data we gathered from that day. As the week continues, our staff will further analyze the data collected with our TrackMan units and Blast Motion sensors, so be on the lookout for that.

+ Here’s a name-to-know from Hudson: INF Jake Busson (2023). At this event, Busson showed impressive arm strength for his age across the diamond, as the 6-foot, 180-pound incoming junior fired an 85 mph strike in his workout, the hardest throw on the dirt of the day. Busson was arguably the day’s top pound-for-pound performer, after taking an impressive round of batting practice, averaging the day’s hardest contact, slugging a couple balls over the Carson Park fence – and he reached a 92 mph max exit speed on one of those homers as well.

+ RHP/OF Mason Stenberg (Superior, 2022) showed well in multiple facets throughout his workout. Built at a projectable 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame, Stenberg started his day by running a 7.06 in the 60-yard dash, the fourth fastest recorded time. He juiced one up at 95 mph in BP, the second-highest number of the day, and his 82 mph high from the outfield finished two ticks behind the event lead. Stenberg later jumped on the mound and threw the hardest fastball of the day, clocking in at 87 mph.

+ Another Superior area talent showed well in Eau Claire: RHP/OF Kell Piggott (2022), who’s listed at a robust 6-foot-3, 205 pounds. Piggott swings a physical and fast right-handed bat that generated exit speeds that ranged into the mid-90s, topping out at 96 mph. He also ran a 7.29 here, which is above-average, and especially for someone built at his stature.

+ From Hudson, RHP Brody Von Berge (2022) looked the part in his PBR event debut. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-hander confirmed previous reports of ours, touching 86 mph with his heater while sitting at 84-86 mph throughout. He’s a physical arm strength follow to check in on this summer and fall.

+ Von Berge’s battery mate at Hudson, classmate Kyler Hove (2022), was consistently on the bag during his round of catcher defense, showcasing a pop time range of 2.02-2.08 with above-average arm strength measured at 75 mph. Offensively, he demonstrated some right-handed pop, launching one home run in BP, measured at 340 feet that left the bat at 91.3 mph.

+ Yet another Hudson prospect showed well at this Eau Claire-area showcase: 1B/LHP Owen Weadge (2022). Listed at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Weadge impressed from the left-handed batter’s box where he leveraged some hard-hit lofted contact; his best batted-ball travelled 358 feet and left the bat at over 92 mph.

+ The Hudson Raiders are already a team to monitor come next spring’s WIAA season, and LHP Ben Berkhof (2023) is only the latest high-follow prospect to emerge from that roster. The incoming junior is a strong, sturdy 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, and he doesn’t require much effort to reach substantial velocity for a player his age, and from the left side. He topped 85 mph in Eau Claire, and the fastball projects metrically, too. While his feel for secondaries is presently raw, Berkhof showed one of the highest ceilings at this showcase.

+ The Wisconsin Dells’ OF Will Michalsky (2022) showcased intriguing athleticism at this event. He’s a wiry 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, and he ran a 7.00 flat to start his day. From there, he showed some hand speed in the right-handed batter’s box that created some whippy barrels that allowed him to connect for low-lying line-drive contact repeatedly. While his bat strength projects as he adds strength and matures, he was still able to record a 93 mph max in BP.

+ RHP/3B Christian Lindow (Rice Lake, 2022) came away a winner from this event after we saw him toe the rubber in the state playoffs for Rice Lake. A proportionally strong 5-foot-11, 185-pound athlete, Lindow recorded the second-hardest max infield velocity, maxing out at 84 mph across the diamond. He translated that arm strength to the mound, topping at 85 mph with his fastball. Lindow’s hardest hit ball left his barrel at 94 mph during his BP round, too.

+ Thorp’s INF/RHP Aiden Rosemeyer (2023) is an all-around follow in the state, as he performed well in multiple areas statistically at this showcase. He ran a 7.22 from a strong, athletic 5-foot-10, 180-pound build, and he swings a right-handed bat with aggressive bat speed – and his arm and arsenal project from the rubber as well.

+ Another follow from Rice Lake emerged on this day, representing the 2024 class: RHP/INF Easton Stone. Stone looked the part on the hill, as the 6-foot, 190-pound right-hander reached an 83 mph high with his fastball, sitting at 81-82 mph throughout his ‘pen.

+ RHP/OF Jalen Pascal is an incoming senior from Eau Claire North worthy of added attention. He’s a wiry/strong 6-foot, 165 pounds, and he has some follow arm speed from the mound. While he was only up to 82 mph at this event, Pascal reached higher velos in-game at the Badger State Battle tourney that took place the weekend prior, and he touched 85-plus mph at the Top Prospect - Milwaukee showcase that he was invited to on July 13.
