Wisconsin 2016 Player Rankings Updated

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

Last week we updated Wisconsin’s 2015 player rankings and this week we move on to the 2016 class. The 2016 class is loaded with top end talent and we saw a few shakeups amongst the top ten.

SS Gavin Lux (Indian Trail), who recently put himself back on the open market, stays atop the 2016 class and is making a big name for himself nationally as one of the top middle infielders in the country.

C Ben Rortvedt (Verona Area, Arkansas) moved up to No. 2. His catch and throw skills are amongst the top in the country in that class and his left-handed bat at a premium position puts him right behind Lux at No. 2.

The top pitchers in the class are tough to sort through, in fact the trio of RHP Nathan Brown (Arrowhead, Florida), LHP Jack Eagan (Wautoma, Indiana) and RHP Alec Marsh (Reagan College Prep) showed their best stuff at the Madison Preseason I.D., but as top heavy as this class is it’s difficult to make any significant jumps.

Al three arms topped out at 92 mph with advanced secondary action and could easily be the top prospect in many other states, it just so happens the 2016 class one of the best we’ve seen from Wisconsin.

Splitting the three arms is Louisville commit Justin Lavey (Tremper) at No. 4 who is one of the top third baseman in the Midwest.

Iowa commit Adam LaRock (Eau Claire North) continues to rise as one of the most dynamic athletes in the state. LaRock’s raw tools are one of the more impressive sets we’ve seen. He has a plus arm at 96 mph from the outfield, 91 mph across the infield, runs a 6.76 60, and has better than 90 mph exit velocity from both sides of the plate.

At No. 8 and No. 9, outfielders Cyrillo Watson (South Milwaukee, Illinois) and Dominic Clementi (Arrowhead, Michigan) are returning to form as both are making their way back from injuries this past summer/fall.

Rounding out the top ten is RHP Matt McCarty (South Milwaukee), who continues to push his ceiling. McCarty has a prototypical pitchers’ body and can command his now 86-87 mph fastball with heavy action. McCarty is one of the tougher at bats in the state as he pounds the zone with an advanced repertoire of fastball, slider, changeup.

The top 100 in the 2016 class saw 18 new additions with LHP Justin Stollberg (Brookfield Central) being the highest rank of the bunch making his way into the top 40. Stollberg has shown vast improvements and his fastball is now touching 86 mph.

Some notable risers include RHP Joe Gahm (Germantown) who has a plus curveball and now sits in the 85-88 mph range with his fastball. RHP Adam Lukas (Grafton) climbed more than 50 spots after the 6-foot-4, 200-pounder sat 85-88 mph at the Madison Preseason I.D.
