Wisconsin Class of 2017 Rankings: Newcomers and Risers

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Supervisor – Wisconsin/Illinois

The 2017 rankings were updated on Monday and expanded to 30 of the top prospects in the state. Today we will look at newcomer to the list as well as prospects whose arrow pointed up.

Newcomers

Anthony Schlass, INF, West Bend West
Schlass is the first 2017 to make a college commitment, choosing Oklahoma earlier this fall. The left-handed hitting Schlass took over the No. 1 spot and carries the biggest bat in this class with explosive bat speed. Offensively he has drawn early comparisons to Arkansas commit Ben Rortvedt (Verona Area) in the 2016 class.

Isaiah Glidden, RHP, Nicolet

Glidden cracks the top ten as a 6-foot-5, 185-pound right handed pitcher. Glidden fits the mold of a highly projectable arm and has already been up to 83 mph with reports even higher in the mid 80’s.

Troy Hickey, LHP, Wilmot Union
Hickey is a high pitchability LHP with a clean arm action and feel for multiple pitches. Reports have his velocity climbing as of late into the low 80’s.

Cooper Kelly, RHP/OF, Edgewood
Athletic two-way player, has loose quick hands at the dish moves well in the outfield too.

Zach Clayton, SS, Oconomowoc
Physically impressive 6-foot-2, 200-pound infielder, excellent raw athlete with raw tools.

Joey Scaffidi, OF, New Berlin Eisenhower
Left-handed hitting burner, runs a 6.79 handles the bat well, opposite field type guy, projects as centerfield/leadoff hitter type.

Zak Kosloske, C, Hortonville
Much improved catcher, solid catch and throw guy, will handle the bat as well.

Griffin Klein, MIF, Indian Trail
Handsy middle infielder, should be a strong defender up the middle. Good baseball IQ.

Jason Abatto, 3B, Kettle Moraine
Short but strong build, will hang his hat on his left-handed bat. Short quick stroke with strong hands.

Jack Mahoney, LHP, Appleton West
Prototypical pitchers frame, 6-foot-4, 160-pounds, highly projectable, huge hands, long fingers. Showed really good feel for a mid-70’s fastball and breaking ball.  High ceiling guy.

Risers

Austin Mihlbauer, LHP/OF, Mukwonago
Highly athletic two-way threat, upside might be on the mound. Showed added velocity this fall, up to 82-83 mph from the left side.

Max Van Boxel, LHP, Green Bay East
Pitchable left-hander, good feel for multiple pitches. Cracked starting rotation as a freshman, should be one of top sophomore arms in the state next spring.

Griffin Doersching, 1B/RHP, Greendale
Physical 1B with power bat from the right side. Also has good chance on the mound, upper 70’s strike thrower.
