Wisconsin Class of 2022 Rankings Update

Almost exactly a month from now, the PBR Wisconsin winter showcase circuit begins, on Feb. 14 in Kenosha. Ahead of the winter season’s start date, we’re tidying up the state’s rankings following any notable fall and winter updates. There weren’t many changes to make, so consider this a small update that allowed us to clean up our rankings and reorganize our watchlists ahead of the 2021 season.

CLASS OF 2022 NOTES

+ A few new spaces opened up on the rankings following the departures of INF Keegan Knutson (Combine Academy, NC; South Carolina commit), LHP/1B Luke Ross (IMG Academy, FL; Minnesota), and C Brandon Vlcko (Cedar Rapids Prairie, IA; uncommitted). Each of the three prospects were ranked inside the state’s top-25. So, we added six prospects in total to bring the Wisconsin Class of 2022 Rankings to a top-85 overall.

Here are the new names to get to know: 

Kyle Schupmann SS / 3B / Luther Prep, WI / 2022 Technically, Schupmann debuted inside of our September update, but we landed our first up-close viewing of the Luther Prep prospect at a PBR Illinois event in October and he rocketed up the board as a result. There, at that talent-laden event, Schupmann presented himself as one of the top players in attendance, responsible for one of the day’s best and most efficient rounds of batting practice. We had this to report about him immediately following that performance: “... squared up each and every ball he swung at for a loud liner into the left-center gap on repeat, constantly on the barrel. He averaged the day's third highest exit speed (91.6 mph), farthest average batted distance (316 feet), and second farthest max distance (366). Per Blast, Schupmann's bat and hand speed marks were both well above-average, and his athleticism seamlessly translated to the left side of the infield. On defense, he projects to fit at third base long term. He can become an asset there, with athletic overall actions attached to a big arm, one that topped out at 89.”

Reece Stangel C / Roncalli, WI / 2022 Stangel pieced together a terrific fall and it landed him a sound debut inside the state’s top-70 overall. First, at a PBR Illinois invitational, Stangel impressed at first as an above-average receiver in an athletic 6-foot-1 build. He moved around the backstop well, stuck pitches effectively, and it didn’t take long for him to stand out offensively either. He attended the Southern Wisconsin Open later in the month where he came away as one of the top players in attendance. Stangel’s right-handed swing is simple and fluid, and he utilizes his above-average size and strength well to produce advanced bat speed that flashed upside bat strength. Increasing his strength in the offseason can push Stangel to the next level offensively in 2021.

Logan Libby OF / Waukesha North, WI / 2022 Libby is another athletic outfielder with a top-of-the-order profile, and he debuts inside this update following a strong showing at October’s Southern Wisconsin Open. There, Libby ran a 6.76 in the 60-yard dash, with a simple and quick right-handed swing that sprayed line-drives around the field capably.

Grant Beth OF / LHP / Catholic Memorial, WI / 2022 Beth is an especially strong, left/left two-way player to keep a watchful eye on entering the 2021 season. To this point, Beth impresses more often from the batter’s box where his strength helps him connect for consistently loud contact from the left side. Amidst a talented group at the summer’s Underclass Trials, Beth averaged the highest exit speed (88.5 mph), with a 96.6 mph max – while also averaging the farthest average batted-ball distance (275 feet). His offensive profile, and inherent strength, pushed him onto the state’s ‘22 board in this update.

Cade Milton C / Notre Dame Academy, WI / 2022 Another debuting backstop, Milton got better each and every time we saw him in 2020 – and he made a good first impression in 2020 back at the Fox Cities I.D. at the start of the year. Firstly, Milton is a particularly athletic catcher with quick and efficient actions out of the chute, and his quickness and accuracy help his average raw arm strength play up. But it’s been from the batter’s box where Milton has taken his most noteworthy strides. Milton is generating more regular bat strength in-game, and his entire profile is on the rise as a result.

Wyatt Jensen OF / Luck, WI / 2022 Representing Northwest Wisconsin, Jensen is another debuting name on the ‘22 board following several excellent showings at PBR events in Wisconsin and Minnesota throughout 2020. A compact, strong athlete, Jensen produces repeatable, low-lying line-drive contact consistently from the right-handed batter’s box. The frequency he’s able to produce hard-hit liners is his best skill, but he’s also a quick runner with fluid hands that help him range around the outfield with athleticism.

Michael Carpenter LHP / Arrowhead, WI / 2022 A 6-foot-1, 165-pound left-hander who recorded a couple of stout outings in 2020. He was up to 83 mph back at the Badger State Battle in early July, and he worked in a tight breaking ball and changeup to round out his three-pitch mix. As a slender, athletic southpaw, there’s still room for Carpenter to grow, and he’s already proved to have harnessed some quality stuff.

Max Stocco SS / 2B / Marquette University, WI / 2022 In several live looks in 2020, Stocco demonstrated consistent barrel feel from the left-handed batter’s box. Stocco swings an easy, fluid lefty bat that is geared for a contact-oriented profile couple with the ability to spray the ball around the field efficiently. Defensively, he profiles best as a second baseman, but his hands, feet, and actions are all above-average. Stocco is a well-rounded prospect making his debut on the 2022 board here.
