LHP Colton Semmelmann (Brookfield Central, 2026) is one of the top left-handers in the Midwest and was a standout at this past year's Prep Baseball Future Games. The 6-foot-1 left-hander is a fluid mover with advanced feel for three pitches which features a carry fastball that reaches into the low-90s and a big breaking ball as his go-to secondary.

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Semmelmann about his recruitment process and some other fun topics, found below.

Our Q&A

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Colton: During my recruitment process I was looking for three important things, development, culture, and getting to play early in my collegiate career.

P: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

C: My biggest priority was again, trying to find that place where I can develop and play early in my career

P: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

C: South Carolina first saw me at the Prep Baseball Future Games, on the first day I threw.

P: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

C: I think the biggest decision was the coaching, when I was walking around the campus I got to know more about the school and the coaches and after that first day of the visit it felt like I was already part of the family and team, but also the facilities blew me away when I first saw them.

P: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

C: The four other schools that I was talking to were Nebraska, Washington, Iowa and Coastal Carolina.

P: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

C: Probably the toughest person to get out in my opinion is Winston Alonso, the reason why it’s so tough to get him out is because he attacks every pitch that’s in the zone and fights off every 2 strike pitch.

P: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

C: I realized that I was a capable of making a jump after the fall of my freshman year.

P: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

C: Just stay on the grind and don’t let people get in your head.

P: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

C: Getting the opportunity to play with the best 2026s in Wisconsin and competing against some of the best players in the class at Future Games.

P: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

C: I feel are team is gonna be good. with are elite pitching staff and good hitters we will be a solid team to follow throughout the spring season.

P: How did the Future Games and/or the Illinois State Games affect your recruitment process? Did you receive more attention following the event(s)?

C: The biggest event was by far the Future Games, after that first day I pitched my X account was blowing up with college programs following me.

P: If you could steal any tool or quality from another player in the state, what would it be and who would it be from?

C: I would definitely have to say Peter Kussow's curveball.

P: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?

C: For my travel ball team probably Kyle Rogosienski and for my high school it would probably be Taylor Rampetsreiter

P: Did Prep Baseball assist in your recruiting? Whether it be through a showcase, tournament coverage, tweets, etc? If yes, please explain.

C: Prep Baseball helped me a lot through my prep career some big examples were social media posts after a good start, but also helping my name get out even more at the Future Games.
