Top 10 Stories of 2024: Lux Wins the World Series

At the end of each calendar year, the PBR Wisconsin staff reflects back on the 10 most intriguing headlines that surrounded the baseball scene in the Badger State. Through the end of the month, we will break down the most impactful storylines from an eventful 2023 campaign, ending with our No. 1 story revealed Dec. 31.

Kenosha native and 2024 World Series Champion, INF Gavin Lux (Indian Trail, 2016) captures the top spot for first time since 2016.

Lux was one of the higher profile draft prospects to come out of the Badger State back in 2016 which was highlighted as the No 1. Story of 2016: The Year of Gavin Lux.

From 10/31/16: "In the days of social media and instant news, Lux's name was splattered across every experts top this and top that list, while several of MLB's GM's and cross checkers made their way to the Badger State to see the highly touted prospect, finishing his 2016 season with a 20th overall selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB Draft."

Lux started off his draft year with a standout performance at the 2016 Super 60: "Arizona State recruit. 6-foot-2, 182-pound frame, athletic, projectable build; has begun to add muscle mass to frame. High-ceiling prospect, left-handed hitting shortstop, one of the top middle infield prospects in the 2016 draft class. Top-level defender, athletic actions, easy, fluid footwork, fields ball in rhythm; plus hands with quick transfer, overall advanced feel for position. Plus arm strength, registered event-best 90 mph across the infield, ability to throw with strength and accuracy from multiple angles and on the move. Offensively, premium left-handed hitting shortstop, line-drive approach, loose, easy hands, present bat speed, level path. Athletic setup, smooth leg lift back, advanced rhythm, active lower half, maintains excellent balance through contact, repeats well. Registered 93 mph exit velocity; ran a 6.86 laser-timed 60." 

Lux built off his performance with a strong spring season hitting .524 with six home runs and 30 RBIs and 23 stolen bases as a senior en route to being selected with the 20th overall pick and the first first round pick from Wisconsin since 1979. 

Lux becomes the latest Wisconsin born player to win the World Series, and the first to do it since Eric Hinske won it in 2009 with the New York Yankees and the fourth to win since 2000.

Lux has been an everyday starter for the Dodgers when healthy and started every game in the playoffs for the Dodgers. Since 2021, Lux accumulated 5.5 fWAR including 1.5 fWAR in 2024 coming off of major knee surgery, and was named NL Player of the Week on July, 21. Lux is projected to be the Dodgers' starting second baseman in 2025.
