2014 Team Preview: Woodrow Wilson HS

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

As we prepare for the upcoming 2014 high school season, we will be taking a preseason glimpse at programs from around the state.

Team: Woodrow Wilson
Flying Eagles
Head Coach: Mark Daniel
2013 Overall Record: 21-11 (Lost in State Semifinals)
Returning lettermen: 11

Chris Metrick, SS/RHP, Class of 2014 (WV Wesleyan recruit)
Logan Wriston, OF/RHP, Class of 2014
Josh Rakes, RHP/3B, Class of 2014
Hunter Halstead, 1B, Class of 2015
Brandon Chandler, RHP/3B, Class of 2016
Brady Knapp, LHP, Class of 2015

The Flying Eagles got within two wins of a state title in 2013, but ultimately fell to Cabell Midland 4-0 in the semifinals in Charleston. Coach Mark Daniel feels like he has a team capable of making a return trip to states. According to Daniel, "We will have a deep pitching staff. We return six pitchers from the 2013 varsity team. We return 11 lettermen and will have good team speed, with solid defense. I feel we should be one off the top AAA teams in state."

Leading the charge will be Metrick who signed with WV Wesleyan in November. The senior hit .320 with 10 doubles, 21 RBI and sported a nifty 1.00 ERA on the hill last season. OF/RHP Logan Wriston also had a big season, hitting .340 with 12 doubles, 25 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Junior 1B Hunter Halstead returns following a .280 average a year ago.

Rakes should head the pitching staff. He comes off a junior season in which he went 6-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 57.1 innings of work. Junior LHP Brady Knapp, who Daniel feels could be dominant, and Sophomore RHP Brandon Chandler will also be counted on heavily on the mound.
