Appalachian Aces tally 9 hits in 4-1 win over Flood City 2020's

Josh Kuykendall
West Virginia Director of Scouting

The Appalachian Aces defeated the Flood City 2020's out of Johnstown, PA 4-1 on the final day of the WVU Team Camp. Aces pitchers surrendered only one run on three hits over seven innings of baseball. They were able to keep the 2020's off balance all day limiting their hitters to only singles.

"Anytime you only allow three walks, you're going to put yourself in a position to win games. Coach Davis does a great job communicating the importance of throwing strikes with our pitchers, and it really showed today. I was very pleased with our pitchers and catchers today." said Kuykendall .

Trailing 1-0, Appalachian Aces hitters got the offense moving in the bottom of the 3rd when Grant Hussey lead off the inning with a hard hit single up the middle just out of the reach of a diving Flood City shortstop. Eli Kirkendoll then laced a ball up the middle advancing Hussey to 2nd. With two on, and nobody out, Trevor Thomas singled to right field scoring Hussey. Sebastian Stewart followed that with a single of his own to right field, scoring Kirkendoll. Flood City was then able to retire the next three Aces in order to get out of the jam.

In the bottom of the 5th with nobody on, and two out, Carter Lyles smoked a double past the 2020's left fielder. Devon Neal followed with a single to left field that scored Lyles. Neal was then thrown out trying to advance on the throw home.

Hussey led off the 6th with an impressive, 12-pitch at-bat leading to a walk. He then advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, before scoring on a Kirkendoll single to right field.

Kirkendoll and Stewart each had 2 hits on the day. Issac Miller also had a double.

"Coach Heenan talks to our guys constantly about how they approach their at-bats. We are being more selective and swinging at better pitches which is leading to more success at the plate. He does an outstanding job and will continue to make our guys better" said Kuykendall.

The Appalachian Aces (3-2) will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Potomac State College in Keyser, WV. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm at Golden Park.
