Game Recaps: AAA & AA State Semifinals

By Greg Williams
West Virginia Executive Director of Scouting

Day two of the 2017 West Virginia state tournament saw a number of dominant pitching performances, a pair of lopsided wins and Bridgeport extending their bid for a 4th consecutive state title.

CLASS AAA

Hurricane 10,  Morgantown 0

Garrett Gress improved to 11-0 on the season with a complete game one-hitter with one strikeout and one walk on just 55 pitches in a game shortened to five innings by the run rule.

The Redskins scored 3 runs in the 4th inning and 7 more in the 5th to win in walk-off fashion.  Jacob Allen and Logan McClure each had two hits in the 10 hit Hurricane attack.  Eight of the nine Redskins starters recorded a hit.

ST. ALBANS 16, Washington 6

Trailing 6-2 after an inning and a half, the Red Dragons scored 14 unanswered runs, including eight in the bottom of the 6th inning to win a run shortened game.

Sophomore Nick Loftis entered in the 3rd inning and worked the final four frames allowing just one hit while striking out six to earn the win.  Loftis was also the offensive star of the day leading the St. Albans' 13 hit attack with a 3-for-4 day with an RBI.

CLASS AA

Bridgeport 4,  James Monroe 0

Senior Gordon Swiger spun a complete game two hitter with 12 strikeouts and the Indians jumped to a 3-0 1st inning lead that was more than enough to propel Bridgeport to the title game.  The Indians are now one win from a state record 4th consecutive state title.

Weir 6, Wayne 2

Senior Michael Mills allowed just five hits over six innings while striking out nine and Donovan Spencer went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored as Weir pulled off the biggest upset of the first two days.
