Woodrow Wilson 5, McDowell 4

Woodrow Wilson's perseverance paid off as they won this cross state battle in dramatic fashion.  McDowell opened the scoring early as a triple by Michael Ruf plated Jake Dietz to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.  The Flying Eagles answered immediately when Hunter Fansler (currently No. 13 in the WV class of 2019 rankings) singled and Cameron Pack doubled along with an error and two walks to make the score 3-1.teamPicThumb116117-12027-1bdujuq.jpg (720×624)

Woodrow Wilson was able to add on in the second.  Fansler's second hit, a double, followed by a Michael Maiolo (currently No. 1 in the WV Class of 2018 rankings) double resulted in a 4-1 lead.

The Pennsylvania squad battled back.  A hit batter combined with singles by Dietz and Ruff resulted in two fifth inning runs for the Trojans.  McDowell then tied the score at four in the sixth on a single by Luke Jackson and two Woodrow Wilson miscues.

Michael MaioloThe stage was set for the Flying Eagles seventh inning heroics.  It looked as if the contest was headed into extra innings as McDowell recorded the first two outs of the inning in routine fashion.  However, the Flying Eagles had a different idea.  Jacob Sheets and Antonio Leopardi both singled.  Austin Amtower then created a life memory by walking Woodrow Wilson off on a third consecutive single.

Multiple hit games were recorded by McDowell's Jake Dietz (2-for-3, RBI) and Michael Ruf (2-for-3, 3B).  Hunter Fansler and Antonio Leopardi both had two hit games for the Flying Eagles.  Maiolo was his usual consistent self on the mound.  He went the distance with a final line of 6 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 1 BB.
