Game of the Day: Jefferson at Washington

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

The Jefferson Cougars (#2 in the AAA Elite Eight) traveled to the Washington Patriots (#7 in the AAA Elite Eight) yesterday for a match-up of Region II favorites.  Jefferson (16-1) carried an eight game win streak with them with their only loss on the season to Hammonton, NJ while playing in the Mingo Bay Classic in South Carolina.  The Patriots were riding their own four game win streak. What ensued was a pitcher's duel that was not decided until the final inning. Jefferson junior shortstop Paul Witt (right), a VCU commit, went 2-for-4 registering the only multi-hit game for either team.

Washington opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning on the strength of a two-out double by Texas Cobb and a Jeffrey Silvestre single to give the Patriots an early 1-0 lead.  Sophomore RHP Conner Nurse (No. 2 in the WV Class of 2017) worked efficiently keeping Jefferson off the board until the 5th inning when the Cougars got a lead-off single from Wil Oliver who then scored on a two out error to knot the game at one.

Jefferson bunched an Andy Disque walk, Chase Crockett single and a Jordan Beans pinch hit, two out single to plate two runs for the final 3-1 margin.  Washington managed to make thing interesting in the bottom of the 7th but ultimately left the tying runs on base to end the game.

Nurse was the hard luck loser working 6.1 innings while allowing just four hits.  The sophomore struck out two and walked two while allowing two earned runs. Charlie Barnholt picked up the win in 1.2 innings of relief.  Disque worked the first 5.1 innings allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out four.

The two teams will get together again on May 7 at Jefferson for the second game of a home-and-home series.
