Unsigned Senior Spotlight: RHP/OF Jared Cleghorn

By Greg Williams

Uncommitted seniors often begin to get a little uneasy at this point in the early fall. With the early signing period looming in November a general attitude of unrest tends to settle in if the right school has not come calling for them.

Over the coming weeks we will take a look at some unsigned seniors that showed next level ability during their participation in the recent WV Top Prospect Games.

rhp/OF Jared Cleghorn (Bridgeport hs)

Jared CleghornCleghorn sat 82-83 while topping at 84 mph from a 3/4 arm slot during three innings of work with five strikeouts at the recent WV Top Prospect Games. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-hander also showcased a 67 mph curveball with 10/4 rotation, a 70 mph slider with later, shorter break, and an occasional knuckle ball at 67 mph. The two-way prospect ran a 7.25 60-yard dash and flashed an 80 mph arm from the outfield. Cleghorn starts his right-handed swing from a slightly open stance and shows good balance throughout. He displayed a solid feel for the barrel in an above average round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph.

Cleghorn tossed a complete game, two hit shutout in leading Bridgeport to a 5-0 Class AA title game win over Chapmanville Regional in June. The uncommitted senior is ranked No. 29 in the WV Class of 2016.

Following the completion of the Fall College Prospect Program unsigned seniors will have an opportunity to stand out on a day set aside for them to display their talent in front of those schools that are still looking to fill their recruiting needs for the fall of 2016.

The 2015 Unsigned Senior Showcase will take place on October 3 at the Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA. This event continues to grow in popularity and in its ability to help match available seniors with college programs that have needs. Over the past three years 37 of 57 prospects have gone on to make college commitments with several others attempting to walk on and make college rosters this fall.
