WV Notebook: A Review of the First Seven Months

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

Shane EnnisThe first seven months of evaluating high school baseball prospects in the state of West Virginia has led to the conclusion that many talented prospects in the state simply lack the exposure that is prevalent in a number of other PBR states. American Legion Baseball continues to be the most popular avenue of summer baseball in the state and very few of the top prospects travel outside of West Virginia's borders to be seen by college coaches in the region.

The Class of 2014 has had a solid fall with a number of Division I commitments from players that occupy spots in the rankings. With RHP/OF Shane Ennis, ranked No. 1 in the class, committing yesterday to WVU, five of the top 13 ranked players have now made Division I commitments.

2014 WV Commitments

Rank Name State School Class Pos Commitment
1 Shane Ennis WV Hampshire 2014 RHP West Virginia
3 Seth Kinker WV Cabell Midland 2014 3B Ohio State
7 Luca Fuscardo WV Weirton Madonna 2014 OF Kent State
12 Jimmy Galusky WV Preston 2014 SS West Virginia
13 Dylan Frye WV Ritchie County HS 2014 OF Coastal Carolina
30 Vincent "Bub" Haddox WV Oak Glen 2014 SS West Liberty

WVU has already received a verbal commitment from Hurricane HS catcher Tate Brock, ranked No. 2 in the WV Class of 2015. Logan HS C/3B/RHP Zach Minnick, ranked No. 1 in the class, has also received considerable interest from Division I programs. Add in LHP Brian George (Petersburg HS), ranked No. 10 in the class committing to Penn State, and the Class of 2015 is well on its way to surpassing this year's senior class.

The No. 1 ranked prospect in the WV Class of 2016, SS/RHP Logan Goodnight (The Linsly School) has also made his verbal commitment. Goodnight announced his plans to attend Penn State earlier this fall.

In an effort to showcase the talent in the state, and to provide additional opportunities for exposure, two high profile events have been added to the lineup of events in 2014. In the coming year the addition of the PBR Mid-Atlantic Border Battle in July and the WV Top Prospect Games in August will greatly increase opportunities for West Virginia's most talented prospects to gain some additional exposure.
