Prep Baseball Report

West Virginia Open ID Showcase Just Around the Corner

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

It has been just over a month since Prep Baseball Report began operations in West Virginia. In that time we have had the opportunity to scout a large number of state playoff games and prospects from around the state and have seen our first unsigned senior, RHP Matt Maiers, sign a scholarship with Potomac State. Following are a few first impressions.

+ The depth of pitching in West Virginia is not great, but the top end arms have the ability to be successful college pitchers. We have seen a handful of mid-80's arms with at least one quality secondary pitch.

+ Underclassmen in the state have opportunities to compete for playing time much earlier than in other states in the PBR coverage area. Some of the most impressive prospects at the state tournament last week in Charleston were from the Class of 2015 and 2016.

+ There are a significant number of quality prospects that have the ability to compete at the college level that have gone unnoticed or have not found the right avenue to showcase their abilities.

We have begun to compile an exhaustive database of the top prospects in the state, but have only begun to scratch the surface. We have created profiles on our website for 200 prospects to date and are adding players daily. This is a free service and any player with aspirations of playing at the next level is encouraged to send us his information to have a profile constructed. CLICK HERE to send us your information.

The West Virginia Open ID Showcase is scheduled for July 16 on the campus of Alderson-Broaddus College. This will be an excellent opportunity for Class of 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 prospects to showcase their talents for college coaches. The event will be used to evaluate players for possible inclusion in the West Virginia player rankings. Prospects in attendance will also be competing for the potential to be invited to future invitation only events hosted by Prep Baseball Report.
