1B JW Hopkins (2022) Hopkins has long been known for the power tool in the bat, as he has shown upper 90’s-low 100’s exit velocity at previous events. No doubt the juice is still there, but Hopkins showed a very disciplined approach against the quality arms that Hartselle rolled out on Monday night. In an early at-bat, Hopkins took a quality breaking ball down and slightly away right back up the middle for a solid single. In his next at-bat, the junior saw an off-speed pitch on the inner-half and promptly got the barrel out front for a pull side double to help jump start the Patriot offense.
Hopkins continues to show his big time power as he showed an event best 98 mph exit velocity off the tee. Slightly open stance with a fairly high leg kick approach allows him to create some torque in the lower half. There is definite tit in the swing plane and he showed a mostly pull side approach. The hands show some quickness and there is plus bat speed with nice extension through the finish. Actions at 1B are clean and he showed nice feet around the bag. Big corner infielder in the ‘22 class with a loud bat.
Continues to produce with the bat each time we see. Physical ‘22 grad that has big time juice at the plate, as evidenced by his 97 mph exit velocity off the tee. Shows an even stance with the feet with a wide base and has a slight crouch in the stance. The swing shows some violence in it and there is definite tilt in the swing path. Really keeps the barrel through the zone and shows a LCF to pull side approach with some backspin. At 1B, he showed well picking balls out of the dirt and he showed natural actions around the bag. Showed well coming off the bag and starting the 3-6-3 DP.
Impressive round of BP in the morning. Showed big-time poolside power and left the yard multiple times during his round. Slightly open stance and leg kick approach allows him to really use his lower half and the hands and barrel stay through this zone. Showed nice range in the field and the ability to move laterally with some arm strength. May eventually end up at 1B.
