5/16/19

vs Turlock in 1st round of SJS D1 playoffs - USC commit; Continues to improve and velocity has been incrementally ticking upward, up to 92 in this look, has sharpened up control as well, located well on oppo arm side with some comeback life, elevated fastball more in two strike counts than I had seen previously, slider was harder than earlier in season (76-77 mph) and looks to be improving the bite on that pitch as well. Mixed in some slower breaking balls that more resemble a curveball (71-73 mph). Composed on mound, was in control of delivery, has incorporated an occasional pause/gather over the rubber and that timing adjustment is aiding in his fastball control. Went 4+ in this one, 5 K, 1 BB, 4 H, 1 ER. One of the rising RHPs in 2020 class and there could be even a bit more velocity spike in summer season. Does lose velocity a bit starting around 4th inning and in the stretch, but didn't lose as much as in previous outings this spring which is a good sign going forward.

3/13/19

Cal commit; viewing vs St. Mary's HS; He's got a good build and good stuff though in two outings I've seen the stuff tail off as he gets deeper into the outing. He has a rhythmic delivery and loose arm, gets to a high overhand slot and finishes with nice extension. There could be some more drive from his lower half which might allow him to hold the velocity deeper into games. In any case, he touched up to 89 and sat for the most part in the 87-88 mph range, with some 85-86 showing up in the 4th inning. He showed deft feel for the breaking ball today, with velocity ranging 70-75 mph. He can alter the shape of the pitch from an almost 12/6 that he buckled a few hitters with and then can also put some lateral action on it to sweep it which was effective vs both right and left-handed hitters. That one is the slider-ish slurveball that is in the 74-75 mph range.

2/18/19

Scrimmage v Bella Vista HS - Cal commit. Built along the lines of an average 6-foot-0 right-hander body but does have some lower body development, on a staff with ridiculous talent for a HS team he has perhaps the fastest arm (can hear his arm whip past his head) and loosest wrist of them all. He gets to an overhand slot and has an aggressive arm action/delivery. The velocity peaked at 89 mph and in his second inning he was down to the 84-85 mph range. He mixed in a breaking ball that is curveball speed (70-72 mph) but slider shape and due in part to some separation timing isues, he just couldn't get much tilt on that pitch. His third offering is a 79-81 mph change-up that he kept down in the zone for the most part.
